When it comes to smoothies, we like to take matters into our own hands.
The store-bought variety, which may contain an abundance of healthy fruits, still contains lots of added sugars. Some smoothies can have as many calories as a fattening milkshake!
The first step is to eliminate empty calories from any smoothie recipe. That means nixing peanut butter, yogurt, and even almond milk, which can all contain added sugars. Fruit juices are another no-no, as they’re the nutritional equivalent of sugar water.
What you can add to your smoothie, to give it extra fat-burning powers, is spices.
They add calorie-free tastes to anything, and that includes smoothies. Sweet spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger all boost satiety and mimic sweetness, helping you cut back on sugar but not on taste. Plus, people who eat spices have been linked to better heart health, blood sugar regulation, and brain function.
