Hating Your Job Can be Bad For Your Health: Study

Some people love their job and unfortunately, others hate it. If you’re in the latter group and lucky enough to move onto to something that’s a better fit, it can feel like a vacation.

Every day can feel stress free- at least for a while. But for those who are stuck with the daily grind of duties they abhor, the ramifications can be more than just a nuisance.

Research is showing that going to a job every day for years that you firmly dislike can actually be bad for your health.

The study involved was done by Ohio State University’s Jonathan Dirlam and Hui Zheng and was presented at the American Sociological Association’s annual meeting. It showed that those who detest their job in their 20s and 30s- and who stick with it- can experience health problems because of it, once they reach their 40s.

Researchers looked at data from 6,432 Americans who participated in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth in 1979. Over many years, participants rated their job satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 4 and also reported back on the state of their overall health.

Those who were more dissatisfied with their daily work experienced more trouble sleeping, more depression and generally worried more than those who continued to like their jobs.



Why is this significant? According to Forbes.com, more than 50% of Americans are currently unhappy with their job situation for one reason or another. Imagine what a better place the world could be with greater workplace satisfaction.

According to Forbes.com, those who have an interest in the work being done, and who like their co-workers, like their job. Earning “good money”, (over $100,000 annually), also makes a difference when individuals rate job satisfaction, which isn’t too much of a surprise.
