Ebola Could Be Back in Nigeria; Man Dies From Ebola-like Symptoms

Ten people were put into quarantine in Nigeria after an Ebola panic a couple of days ago, a year after the World Health Organization declared the country Ebola-free.

A man has also died from ebola-like symptoms shortly after being admitted into the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, says the BBC.

“We have sent blood samples for testing and quarantined identified contacts,” the BBC reported the hospital’s chief medical director, Queeneth Kalu, as saying.

This scare comes on the same day the West African countries that suffered the most from Ebola celebrate being free from ebola for a year.

The outbreaks in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have killed more than 11,000 people, and the WHO warns that it still constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern.”

At the same time, Johnson & Johnson has begun clinical trials for an ebola vaccine in Sierra Leone. The regimen is part of a new study being conducted, close to many recently reported cases in the region.

There is currently no licensed vaccine, treatment or cure for ebola. The company says that the first volunteers have received the initial dose.
