Do These 4 Foods Really Induce Labor?

Do These 4 Foods Really Induce Labor?

If you’re expecting and the baby’s late for its curtain call, it’s possible that these homegrown cures could speed things along.

News out of North Carolina this week is telling the story of a pizza that’s said to have the power to make pregnant moms go into labor. Appropriately nicknamed “The Inducer”, the pie Buffalo Wing Pizza is an invention from Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar.

It’s a pizza made with Buffalo wing hot sauce instead of tomato sauce on the crust, and the spiciness is said to push babies-in-waiting over the edge, so to speak. While it’s not a medical fact that the pizza can make a woman give birth, some think it might have been just what the doctor should have ordered.

What other foods could possibly do the same? Check out these 4 foods that might make junior come out:

1) Pineapple

Fresh pineapple and pineapple cubes, selective focus

It’s a great addition to any fruit salad, but some say pineapple can do even more than please your palate. This fruit is full of an enzyme called bromelain. Bromelain is useful as it’s said to help soften a woman’s cervix, making labor “easier”. (That word is in quotes and will always be as moms know labor is NEVER easy!)

Whether it works or not is up for grabs, but eating some more fruit can’t hurt.

2) Raspberry Leaf Tea

Foods like pineapple, spicy food, and certain teas might induce labour.

Like pineapple, raspberry leaf tea doesn’t really kick start labour like the Buffalo Wing Pizza but rather it prepares the body to give birth. This tea is said to tone the muscles of the uterus, making them work more efficiently. Almost at your due date? Drink up and give it a try.

3) Cumin Tea

A lot of women seem to try drinking cumin tea to speed up their labor. Whether it’s an old wives’ tale or not, it’s a tasty hot drink that could help speed things along. Originally from Egypt, cumin is full of antioxidants, iron and vitamin C.

4) A Big Salad

Foods like pineapple, spicy food, and certain teas might induce labour.

Labor, for most, is all about pushing. And screaming….and pushing. Ingesting a good amount of fiber via a large salad or some other fruits and veggies can help get the process started. Hey, we’ve all read about those babies who were born in the toilet, am I right? Just don’t push too hard ‘til your back on the other side of that door.

5) Garlic

Foods like pineapple, spicy food, and certain teas might induce labour.

Just like the pooping power of salads and dates, garlic can actually loosen your stool and make everything slide out that much more easily. The logic may be that once you clear the path for the baby, he or she is sure to come soon thereafter.

Does it work each time? No, but garlic is sure delicious.
