Avoid These Foods if You Have Heart Failure

Avoid These Foods if You Have Heart Failure

If you have heart failure, there are certain foods you can avoid to improve your quality of life.

They’re typically foods that increase fluid retention, contribute to blood sugar problems, or lead to obesity.

Eliminating these foods from your diet will make it easier for your heart to do its job.

Potato Chips

Potato chips are one of the worst foods for people with heart failure due to its high fat and sodium content. People with heart failure should maintain a healthy weight, and high-fat snacks won’t help with that goal.

So, steer clear of tortilla chips, pretzels, snack mixes, and even some types of crackers, and replace them with low in fat and high in fiber veggies and fruits.

Wine

You’re probably confused – wine is supposed to provide heart health benefits, no? That may be true for a healthy heart, but for those with heart failure, the alcohol does no favours in helping your heart pump, slowing down your heart rate. Most doctors recommend avoiding all types of alcohol when you have heart failure.

White Bread

Highly processed grains like white bread lack healthy fiber, or dietary fiber, that helps your body regulate blood sugar levels and scrub cholesterol from your arteries. Pass on white bread, white rice, regular pasta, many boxed breakfast cereals, and similar processed grains.
