5 Easy Ways to Protect Your Mental Health

You can’t prevent all troubles, but some daily maintenance can help.

World Mental Health Day is October 10, 2019. According to the World Health Organization, the goal of this year’s awareness day is to raise support for mental health issues globally, with a specific focus on suicide prevention.

It’s a fact that every 30 seconds someone around the globe loses their life to suicide. Obviously, awareness around how to prevent suicide needs to increase, and the stigma attached to suicide and mental health troubles need to be addressed.

But not every person facing mental health challenges is suicidal. Mental health trouble can come in many shapes, faces and levels of severity.

How can you help ensure you get the support you need, if and when you do, and protect your mental health on a daily basis? Here are 5 tips from experts.

1) Focus on Just One Thing

According to Patricia Harteneck, Ph.D., MBA, on PsychologyToday.com, staying in the moment can help you ward off negative thoughts, which can lead to depression, (or be an active part of it).

Overwhelmed by the demands you’re facing? Focus on your shower. Think of all the tastes you’re experiencing as you eat breakfast. These tips may sound silly, but they can actually pull your mind away from worries, at least for a moment. Doing this frequently throughout your day can help you alleviate the stress your mind may be facing, and helps move you towards a more relaxed frame of mind, which helps both your brain and body.

2) Exercise

Sometimes a foggy state of mind just means you need more oxygen up there. Get moving!

3) Seek Out a Good Therapist

Some battles are too big to face alone. There’s nothing wrong with seeking help. ( Many people do!) A therapist can help you redirect your thinking and move ahead when life trips you up.

4) Get Enough Sleep

Everything is harder without enough rest. In fact, some say a good sleep is the backbone to good health. Going with the natural flow of your circadian rhythms can help. If you’re having trouble with insomnia, talk to your doctor.

5) Avoid Self-Medicating With Alcohol and Drugs

Many people facing stressful life situations turn to substances to dull their worries and pain. But this only leads to further problems, down the road. An occasional beer is fine, but using substances to face your challenges only make them worse. If you think you have a substance abuse problem, click here.
