I can't understand why this physician is at OHSU, a system dedicated to patient care, teaching and learning, and resolving complex medical conditions. His arrogance, distance, and total lack of empathy were stunning. I wish I could give him zero in punctuality and a negative score in helpfulness.

This doctor is egotistical, rude and condescending. He didn't listen to me nor read my medical history prior to giving his opinion. He may be a brilliant surgeon but his bedside manner deserves a number less than 0/10. He made me feel stupid, ignored my pain and decided to follow his own agenda (confirming that I had been misdiagnosed) rather than help me diagnose and cure my post lumber peritoneal shunt surgery pain which he insisted could not exist. If you want a surgeon who brushes you off, doesn't listen to a word you have to say and makes you feel stupid and don't understand your own body then he's your guy but if you want someone who treats you like a human choose another doctor.

I was referred to Dr. Burchiel for post LP shunt surgical abdominal pain. He insisted that my shunt could not possibly be working and incised that the lumbar punctures that were done to diagnose me with intracranial hypertension were useless because of my BMI and so he ordered an invasive 24 hour bolt ICP monitoring in the Neurological ICU. He then wanted to prove to me through a cisternogram that the shunt was not working and yet the test showed that my shunt was patent. The final straw for me was when I told him that I had a Medtronics Programmable LP shunt and he told me (and wrote in his encounter summary) that based on the X-Ray I had a programmable Codman shunt that was misused because it is a VP shunt. I may not be a board certified and celebrated neurosurgeon who heads the OHSU Neurosurgery department but I can read and if he had read even just the operative report from my neurosurgeon in Kansas he would have read that a Medtronics programmable LP shunt was placed and described its current setting and direction. Upon my next visit he apologized by saying that he and his colleagues were unaware that Medtronics made a programmable LP shunt. Funny how his encounter summaries did not include that I was correct in our first encounter when I said that my headaches were not caused by high pressure; the ICP confirmed that I was correct; also in our first encounter he said that there was no possible way that my shunt was patent and yet the cisternogram proved that my shunt is in fact working; finally he apologized about not being aware that the shunt I told him I had existed.... but none of those admissions were put in his encounter summaries. If I take my grievences to the hospital board it won't amount to anything since he is one of the most respected surgeons in the state of Oregon so I am taking my campaign to the internet to warn potential patients. Be your own advocate, don't take your doctor at his/her word, get copies of the data for yourself and get a second opinion if you do not feel that you are being treated with respect.

Dr. Kim Burchiel Crushed my moms skull and OSU feels the need to proceed to send bills for his damage on her. I would not recommend this doctor because of the experience and pain my mom has gone through these past 6 years. Thanks Burchiel. Still malpractice even though she never finished the lawsuit.

I was referred to Dr. Burchiel from my neurologist for Trigeminal Neuralgia pain. I found Dr. Burchiel to be extremely knowledgeable and gave me all of my options and went through all of the complications to having MVD surgery. I am extremely grateful for him and his entire team who saved my life with dealing with uncontrollable facial pain. He spent appropriate amount of time with me and I felt that I was in great hands right away. After waking up from surgery I had absolutely no pain from Trigeminal Neuralgia and was out of the hospital in 4 days and have been enjoying my life again. I can not thank him and his staff enough for saving my life. I would hands down refer anyone to him. A very skilled surgeon and top notch in my book.

He was very honest about what is known about my condition versus what is unknown at this time, and seemed to have a genuine interest in investigating further to find more answers. He also gave a good explanation of the possible risks and rewards for different management strategies. From previous ratings, it appears several patients weren't thrilled with his bedside manner, but I thought he was excellent. He spoke to me in a scientific/investigative (sort of like a detective) tone and refrained from displaying positive or negative emotions. I would think that this is a characteristic that every patient would want to see in their doctor; someone who sticks to the facts and uses the visitation time as efficiently as possible in an attempt to move towards a proper diagnosis. Dr. Burchiel also spent a significant amount of time with me in order to perform physical assessments, ask about my symptoms, review MRIs and other test results, answer questions, and give recommendations.

Aloof, condescending. I was referred to him by another OHSU doc. Burchiel told me that "it just isn't worth my time." What an unbelievably terrible encounter with an inconsiderate boob.

I was referred to him and told I needed surgery right away by a Neurologist at OHSU. He came in the room and with his arms crossed asked me why I was there. He told me my referral to him was a waste of his time and, after ranting about the many "quacks out there" who treat my condition and accusing me of diagnosing myself (I had not heard of the condition till I was diagnosed at OHSU), he did not provide any follow up care or advice. No bedside manner, extremely condenscending, egotistical. His attending came in the room after he left and apologized for his behavior and rants and highly recommended another opinion.

Dr. Burchiel was extremely helpful in providing expert advice that was relevant to my condition. He did not assume that surgery was the only option available to treat my condition and referred me to a neurologist for alternative therapy. After nine years, I returned to Dr. Burchiel for surgery with very excellent results.
