I have nothing but good things to say about Sylvia in regards to my pregnancy, however, during labour and delivery her bedside manner left a lot to be desired. She ignored our birth plan and made decisions for me and my baby without discussing those decisions with me first. There were several things she insisted upon that were unnecessary ie: internal fetal monitoring, wearing a hospital gown, having an IV.
All that being said, once baby was delivered and we went home Sylvia was right back to being amazing and helpful, and I again have nothing but good things to say. If you want an incredibly knowledgeable midwife, maybe have Sylvia and add a doula in the delivery room.

I cannot shower enough praise on Sylvia. I absolutely LOVED her approach. While she may be "no nonsense" she walked me through every single step of what to expect and I cannot imagine being more prepared going into my first labor/birth. When my first ended in a Csection, and they were prepping me for surgery, they wouldn't let my husband in yet. I was so scared and she was there and held on to me, strong and sure. Now, second time around, there is no one I can imagine being there with me through every step.

This was not the warm experience I was expecting from a midwife.
While she is very punctual and thorough it is almost too much and everything seems very negative.
I don't think I left a single appointment without crying in my car after.
Not the positive nurturing experience I was hoping for from a midwife at all.

Only great things to say about Sylvia. She is an expert in this area and I was completely comfortable knowing she had mine and my baby's health as the number one priority. Her businesslike approach may not be for everyone but her caring heart is evident when she answers emails and phone calls so promptly. She has delivered three of our children and both my husband and I would highly recommend her.

I went to Sylvia for a more personal experience, and I have been more then happy with her! I am a high risk pregnancy and she's taken every worry of mine seriously! Some men may be intimidated by a strong woman but my husband loves her. She goes by current research and doesn't take any bs or sugar coat the truth. WAY better experience then my prior pregnancy when the call group "forgot" to send my prenatal care to the hospital and I was 3 months premature! My daughter and I were in Vancouver by the time they sent over my medical history! Also love that Sylvia gets the answers I need and clearly makes my baby's health a priority. Love love love Sylvia!

I was really unhappy when I had her last year with my youngest. She was determined I had Gd and mentioned my weight constantly. Only good thing was she was willing to let me go as long as I wanted past 40 weeks and she (mostly) left me alone while in labour.

Sylvia was an absolute joy to have as as midwife. Her care and expertise was fantastic. She educated us for more than we ever had with our first child who was born with a resident Dr. She was always on time, returned our calls even if they were at weird times. She gave us so many options that we didn't even know were available to us with our DR. We are forever grateful for midwives. Might I add just because someones birth plan does not go according to their expectation does not make the midwife the object of their negative experience. Nor does a personality conflict between spouses and the midwife. Do your research and find the best fit. I have nothing but great things to say about Sylvia for our family and the numerous other families I know that have used her.

Please try and find someone else. She made my husband really uncomfortable so that he did not want to attend appointments, she made really mean comments constantly about my weight. She took something that was supposed to an amazing and joyful first baby experience and made me feel like a horrible parent and person well before my child ever came into this world. I thought this was just my experience but I have a friend who tells me she cries every time she leaves an appointment with her, and several husbands whose wives used Sylvia tell me the same thing, that they were made to feel very uncomfortable. I went with a midwife because I wanted a natural and supportive experience and I feel like instead I picked out a "mean girl" to hang out with for a year.

Sylvia is a great midwife! She's full of knowledge and I feel so confident with her catching my babies. Sylvia isn't the type to hold your hand the whole time but rather it's your pregnancy and she there to guide you on your journey. She won't sugar coat things yet she's very caring and tender. Both my experiences with her amazing!

My experience with Sylvia was horrific. My birth plan was not followed, she argued with me, and left me unattended. She disagreed with negative GB results from my OB and didn't send me for additional testing. My urine tests at every visit were negative. After 12 hours my labour had slowed. I was laying down without any suggestion to get up and moved around. Her judgement was clouded by her personal opinions rather then the test results. As result I was scared into an unnecessary csection. There was no communication during labour especially the decision to have surgery. Her comments were "I wasn't in the room". She didn't notice that the baby was posterior which was the result of the slow labour. I found her care to be extremely disappointing and her accountability was inexcusable when confronted. I will never recommend her and will not be using her services for my second birth.
