Dr. Chen is the most arrogant medical professional I have ever met. Throughout every appointment, he made me feel like I was wasting his time and that my questions were stupid. He actually rolled his eyes and huffed and puffed through my last appointment with him. I always left his office feeling like the person who was supposed to help me was annoyed that I came to him for help. Worst of all, he missed the actual medical issue I was dealing with because he didn’t look into my history OR listen to my symptoms, so I spent months taking drugs for a disorder I don’t even have!!! I ended up getting a second opinion from another neurologist, and within 1 visit I was properly diagnosed and on my way to a full recovery. Under no circumstances would I recommend Dr. Chen!!! Cold, cold, cold man!!!

Cold, condescending. If I were his supervisor I would send HIM to a psychiatrist with concerns about psychopathy. His office staff aren't rude but extremely scattered. I would avoid this doctor, there are plenty of decent neurologists at MGH.

When I was referred to a headache doctor I thought he was supposed to help me treat one. If you want to GET a headache, go see Dr. Chen. If you want to deal with a medical problem, try a doctor who doesn’t suffer from having his head stuck up his rear to the shoulder blades.

I agree with what most of you are saying. Dr Chen is the rudest doctor I have ever been to. I have complied with his requests, no tryptans, trigger foods or caffeine. I was put on prednisone to get through this period. First he put me on one med, did nothing for the migraines. Now I am on a other and tapering up. You basically communicate through the portal, which I am not fond of. Meanwhile, 2 months later I still have migraines. This morning I woke with such a bad one, that I called the office number which instructed me to page him, so I did, no response. Irepeated the page. 2 hours later he calls back. Not too happy to hear from me. Tells me I can go up on the med. No, there is nothing you can do for the pain. Then he told me not to page him, to call the office. I have never been treated like this by any doc. I would love the name of the one at BI someone mentioned.

I'm surprised to see these not so great reviews. I had come to Dr Chen with a complicated problem I had been dealing with for two years, and he was able to get to the root of the issue. He put me on medication and told me to call in a week to follow up to see if I was noticing a difference. I called the following week in the morning and received a phone call back in the late afternoon from the NP, letting her know I was not feeling any better. He then was able to schedule me for steroid and trigger point injections THE NEXT DAY. Dr Chen exceeded my expectations.

Dr. Chen is a horrible doctor. Dr. Chen treated my daughter for migraine. He increased her medicine and she continued to have debilitating headaches. My daughter is a student at MIT and needed to be functional. Many days she was unable to get out of bed. He told her she'd have to deal with the pain because otherwise any pain medicine would create rebound headaches. I spoke to Dr. Chen, via the Mass General email. He was condescending and offered no constructive medical advice. I praise God that I just bit the bullet, realized this wasn't going to work and researched other qualified neurologist in Boston. We had to wait 4 months but had a appointment yesterday with a phenomenal doctor, who works at Beth Israel. I don't know if I can name her here, but for those of you countless patients unsatisfied with Dr.Chen, my advice is do your research. Better is available and you all deserve BETTER.

I agree with the previous review. It is EXTREMELY difficult to get in touch with Dr. Chen's coordinator/assistant. I can't imagine how long it might take to reach the doctor himself. When you call MGH Neurology, your call is auto-answered by a recording and put on hold. I called once this morning and asked for a call back. Called again this afternoon because I never heard from them. Both times I waited 10+ minutes to talk to a human who then said they would push my message along to the coordinator.

It's extremely difficult to reach the coordinator for appointments. I usually leave many messages (at least 1/day over a few days) requesting a call back for an appointment but never get a call back. Been going to Dr. Chen for a few years but am no better off than I was at the first appointment. So, I don't think I can comment on "Knowledge." Just keep getting prescriptions but nothing helps. So, I don't think "Helpfulness" is a strong point. Been taking a dangerously high dose and it doesn't seem to alarm anyone but me. MGH is supposed to be #1 but, I should feel better about going here than I do. Is this what going to a neurologist is all about?
