1994 laminectomy with fragments (numb foot, terrific pain.Consulted with 2 orth. surgeons who read the MRI incorrectly. Dr Welsh diagnosed the problem, performed surgery. His skills were unequaled. Rather than 3-4 days of hospitalization: 1 day. He is the best there is.

C5/C6 fusion. Dr. Welsh was honest, informative and told me the pros and cons of having the surgery done. His technique was amazing. Several bone spurs were found and one was pressing into my spinal cord. My pain is not completely gone, but, the nerve root compression is gone and I am very thankful to have had such a fine professional in charge of my healthcare. Thank you, Dr. Welsh and thank you to Yvonne, his assistant also. I owe so much to you both for your caring approach to my needs.

I was referred to Dr. Welsh (the only Neurosurgeon covered by my HMO) complaining of sudden onset lower back pain with no obvious cause. He said I had a tethered spinal cord and if I didn't have back surgery immediately, I would end up in a wheelchair but if I did, it would fix the pain and I would be as good as ever. After surgery I was in unbearable pain. Much worse than before surgery and I have been that way for 11 years. In successive visits he has offered no explanation for the pain, why if I had a tethered spinal cord I could have been so physically active all my life until then, or if anything went wrong during surgery and if he could fix it? His answer to everything was, "I don't know". Years later I went to a pain specialist and started to tell him what happened. I didn't get very far before he finished my story for me. I asked in wonderment how he knew, especially the part about "ending up in a wheelchair". He just smiled and said: "Money."
