It has been many years since I first met with Dr.Marciano, I was sent to him by my GP who told me he is the ONLY neurosurgeon on his go to list. I showed up with my MRI films, my doctor had already sent the report. I was in the most incredible amount of pain, 3 numb toes on my right foot(still numb) my right leg partially paralyzed, and did I mention I was in pain? He looked at the MRI, read the report to me, explained the report to the film, showed me all of the other damage in my back, but the bulged disc was the biggest culprit. He performed a % of use test and feeling on my right leg. We had a VERY in depth heart to heart talk, he told me he does this type of work for a living, but with the trail mix of issues in my back at the time, lets only focus on the disc, the disc had a death hold on the nerve bundle for my right leg, he prescribed a steroid pack, had his team give me a BIG A$$ shot on the nerves and disc that very day, I honestly expected my heart to stop the pain was so freaking intense, I had no driver so I got the shot with NO sedation. We talked again once I recovered from the shot, and scheduled a follow up visit one week later. he said if there was no improvement he would have no choice but go in and work on the disc. Once again he told me he does this type of work for a living, and a back is nothing to mess with, sometimes surgery works out 100%, other times it makes it worse, and the other issues in my back would also need attention, but there was/is so much that where to start and stop would be the issue as not everything could be fixed. My chances of coming out worse off was very high in his opinion.
I took the steroids, the pain pills my doctor had prescribed, went back one week later and was showing positive results from the injection and the steroid pack.
Years later things have only gotten worse, I have disc and bone spur issues from S1/L5 through L1/T12. I was told by Dr. Marciano and years later another Neurosurgeon LEAVE YOUR BACK ALONE! if any paralyses comes back, or if I have a loss of bowel control, unimaginable pain that I cannot get away from, then and ONLY then have a top neurosurgeon go in there, Oh, the other neurosurgeon I talked with, he too indicated Dr. Marciano was the best and ONLY gig in town.
My opinion and $25.00 will get you a couple of Starbuck coffees, but in my opinion, Dr. Marciano is a stand up man, has the integrity to pass on a fat paycheck cutting into someone back if he feels that more damage will come from it. That My Friends is a priceless quality!
So while I have never been under his knife, he was 100% honest! Integrity is priceless! he instructed me to live my life as long as I could, do whatever does not make my back hurt, and if something goes bad, then and only then come see him.
Oh! as a side note, I still take pain meds, my doctor is surprised that with everything going on in my back, I have never asked for or accepted a change in meds or a stronger dose, or a larger quantity, I am still getting by on what I was originally prescribed... My doctor is surprised and impressed, he told me people with long term hang nails are on 10 times what I take and fight for more, My answer, I still have a long ways to go, I cant ramp it up now! My Doctor, and Dr. Marciano are in a different league all together, they are good humans, helping take of humans.
