I was treated as a teaching case--not a patient with needs. Drug allergies were ignored. Phone calls were not returned by: doctor, nurse, or social worker. Had to ask multiple times (>3) for medications; was assured they were ordered. Never received them. It was assembly-line medicine--not something you want when you have cancer. Austin was too busy teaching to pay attention to me, the patient. The only time he honored a request of mine was when it provided a unique teaching opportunity for one of his residents. Austin listened to me and then promptly forgot what we discussed. Had to ask 3 times for surgical procedure to be updated on the day of surgery.

Although Dr. J. Max Austin came VERY highly recommended, and although he is a skilled surgeon with a strong track-record in the treatment of women with gynecological cancers, I have been quite disappointed. His tone can be condescending, he showed up to a consultation unprepared and thus made a gross (and potentially dangerous!) misstatement about my treatment plan, and he flagrantly ignored my request for port placement. In general, he seems ill-suited for working effectively with young, educated, proactive patients who want to feel as though they've been listened to and respected.
