I went to see Dr. Marc Herschfus M.D. at St. Mary Mercy Livonia Outpatient because I was experiencing a severe Ulcerative Colitis flare. At the appointment a variety of blood and stool tests were ordered, including Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) and Calprotectin. It was decided Dr. Herschfus would provide a prednisone prescription after he received a negative C Diff result.

I provided blood and stool samples the next day. I wanted prednisone as soon as possible because of the severity of my condition. The negative C Diff result was provided later the same day. I began calling Dr. Herschfus at St. Mary Mercy Livonia Outpatient to get a prednisone script. I called three times over the course of three days and nobody returned my phone calls. Each time I explained how much I seriously needed medication and each time I was told my concerns would be addressed to Dr. Herschfus.

I never received medication from Dr. Herschfus. It turns out Dr. Herschfus went on vacation for two weeks and had no back up.

Dr. Herschfus looked at my test results when he returned from vacation 15 days later. He had a receptionist call me to say I needed to report immediately to the emergency room because I may have megacolon. The receptionist could not answer any questions, and simply kept repeating that I needed to report immediately to the emergency room.

I called a friend of mine who is also a doctor and she reviewed the lab results that Dr. Herschfus had ordered and she also called Dr. Herschfus at Mary Mercy Livonia Outpatient. It turns out, the Calprotectin result was greater than 3,000, which indicates sever inflammation, but not Megacolon.

Megacolon is extremely rare, and people don’t usually survive Megacolon for 15 days without treatment. So to instruct me to go to the emergency room for Megacolon based on an old test, without bothering to ask me how my symptoms are or to see if I had received treatment from another source during Dr. Herschfus 15 day vacation is negligent.

Dr. Herschfus failed miserably at treating me for ulcerative colitis and caused unnecessary panic by demanding I go to the emergency room, which is the definition of medical malpractice.

I hope this review serves to warn people. And I also hope that Dr. Herschfus and St. Mary Mercy Livonia Outpatient management see this review and become part of the solution to our current medical situation. Because right now Dr. Herschfus and St. Mary Mercy Livonia are part of the problem.

This doctor has absolutely no social skills whatsoever. He was rude and arrogant and strange. Absolutely seems to have no knowledge of the field he is supposed to be practicing. I do NOT recommend this doctor.
