Dr. Kumar was supposed to see me for urgent surgery, but long story short, he left for vacation in the middle of my treatment, after admitting me to the hospital. While in hospital, in horrible pain, Dr. Kumar ordered too many drugs without being aware of my history and I overdosed, and stopped breathing. He didn't even come by after to make sure I was okay. I stayed there for five excruciatingly long days just waiting for answers. Finally I saw somebody else, who refuted all the information Dr. Kumar gave me.... Dr. Kumar gave me the wrong information, recovery time, recovery limits, etc., and it turns out I wasn't even a candidate for surgery. I got a cortisone injection, which saved me from a very invasive surgery, and I'm doing much better now under the care of a different surgeon. I just got a call today from the OR saying Dr. Kumar wants to do my surgery now.... He hasn't even talked to me since he hospital, and all of a sudden he wants to chop me up? No way will I be letting this man cut me open. He is young, and he is kind and compassionate when he talks to you, but my mind was blown by all the things he told me that turned out to be incorrect. He would have ruined my back, and set me up for followup surgeries for the rest of my life, and I would have never known I had any other options. I feel very lucky that I found out in time, and very worried for the other people who won't. DEFINITELY get a second opinion!!!!!

I have hydrocephalus and a stint in my head to control it. In 2014 I was out playing pool with a friend when I was hit with a throbbing and worsening headache. I woke up dazed and confused in the hospital three days later.

There were no doctors or anesthesiologists around when I woke up so I knew this was not the initial time I had been woken post surgery. The last thing I remembered was being out playing pool. My Aunt spoke to me and I nearly jumped out of the hospital bed since she was sitting on my left side and I would come to realize later that I could no longer see out of my left eye. I asked the nurses what was going but while they were very empathetic they had no answers.

It was several days before Kumar decided to grace me with his presence at which point he informed me that the surgery was a success and my stint was working properly so any problems I was having must have been preexisting conditions.

Despite there being nerve damage so fresh there was still swelling he couldn't be bothered.

This experience cost me my profession and my peace of mind and I am so grateful to see that he was placed on suspension and subsequently retired. At least he wont be in a position to hurt and belittle anyone else.

I was 22 years old when I had a severe spinal injury at work leaving me nearly unable to walk or preform any daily chores around my house. With extreme pain down my legs, red flags, and an inability to live comfortably. I struggled with this for nearly 2 years before seeing dr. Kumar. During my first appointment I was evaluated by him and was deemed that I needed emergency surgery. He called the hospital with me in the room and asked them to clear a spot that he could have me in for surgery, the day after my initial appointment with him. After the recovery period for the multiple surgery’s I received I was nearly completely recovered. I could walk normal and do any task around my home and enjoy my hobbies. Even the permanent damage such as loss of reflexes in my leg that I was told by other specialists that would never be fixed. It’s now 4 or 5 years later and I even have the reflexes in my legs back to normal. Dr Kumar. Is an amazing surgeon and I could never thank him enough for restoring my ability to live and enjoy my life. Some of the people on this website have left negative reviews because they did not have the same ability restored to them. Obviously in severe cases you can not always expect complete recovery because not all cases are the same. Those leaving bad reviews of this dr don’t even stop to appreciate the time and effort he made to restore their quality of life. These people are idiots. I trust that Dr. Kumar will do anything and everything possible to help any patient that he has. Even if my surgery had not went as planned and I ended up paralyzed , which was where I was heading anyway, I would still have appreciated the effort he made to do anything he could to help me. I recommend everyone to give their trust to this extremely busy dr to help them. Their is no one I trust more than Dr. Kumar to do whatever he can to help.

When I read the comments for this doctor it seems like they are talking about someone else and not the doctor we met with. Had major back surgery on Jan 17th, 2019. It is one month after the surgery and I walk with no back or leg pain that I lived with daily. I still have numbness in various parts of my feet and legs and posterior, but understand from both Dr. Kumar and my family physician that this will improve over time and could take up to a year to be back to normal. The staff and Dr. Kumar were wonderful and explained everything in a manner that was easy to understand. I am hopeful to make a full recovery with slightly less mobility then when this journey started but without back or leg pain. Thank you so much for all you have done for us.

On September 19, 2018 I was admitted to the Regina General Hospital for Dr. Kumar to implant a lead wire for a neurostimulator. Dr. Kumar had been very thorough in educating me about this process, allowing me to go to the back clinic on the 5th floor for a walk through. I was encouraged with the hope of having less pain due to failed back surgery syndrome which I have suffered with since January 2017. After two back surgeries my pain is still unmanageable so this seemed like a great option, my only other choice was pain and narcotics. I was excited but nervous going into this surgery but encouraged by the fact that it was a relatively basic surgery that had few more risks than the past two surgeries. I woke up from the surgery litterally screaming in abdominal pain. I couldn't stop the heavy contractions in my abdomen and the pain was unbearable. The recovery nurses immediately checked me over, increased my pain meds and called Dr. Kumar. I overheard her request an abdominal X-ray and explain my symptoms. She came back to my bedside and explained to another nurse and myself that Dr. Kumar claimed that my pain had nothing to do with the procedure. She commented that he " made her feel stupid". Given no other option, they medicated my pain as much as possible and sent me up to my room in the 5 th floor. With no orders or concern from Dr, Kumar no other doctor was allowed to check me out. The nurses felt so bad for me but had no other choice but to drug me into sleep, the only solution at their disposal. The following afternoon I was coherent enough to speak with my husband and tell him that we needed to leave the hospital on discharge and re enter through emergency, on my husbands advice I told the nurse in charge of our plans. She encouraged us to wait a few minutes for them to come up with a plan. Within moments I had a thoracic spine and abdominal X-ray ordered , a general surgeon on route and a new neurologist on my case. Over the next four days the intense spasms caused my bowels to shut down. It was immediately suspected that the lead wire was touching a nerve to the bowel . Given the extremity of my pain and the mix of doctors due to the weekend, there was some back and forth as to how to move forward. They started out by trying to restart the bowel unsuccessfully. Finally after numerous procedures including one that required ICU it was decided to go back in and remove the lead wire that by this time X-rays had showed was touching the nerve to the bowel. Upon waking up from that surgery my spasms had stopped, remember these had been insanely severe for what now had become 5 days. Before Dr. Kumar was taken off my case he had stopped in once and asked how my back felt, and said we would wait to turn the unit on until "my TUMMY TROUBLES-subsided " and left the room. I'm sure Dr. Kumar was a great doctor in his day however his lack of skill and judgment in this case shows me that he is no longer the great surgeon he once was. It is time for this man to retire before he kills someone. I am home from hospital recovering slowly and hope to attempt this surgery again in a few months with my new skilled neurosurgeon. I am greatful for the nurses and doctors who finially came to my aid but have not a good word for Dr. Kumar. Please stay away from any surgery with this doctor.

When he did my surgery 10+ years ago, I came out of surgery with cyanosis, blue lips/finger. My family also commented on it. I got no answers from Dr. Kumar or the hospital. I know there's a nurse out there that knows as I heard her say things when I was in recovery. Also was dx with a third heartbeat within months after surgery. I had new leg weakness within 2wk post op, but I did have improvement after surgery. It was recommended that I have a follow up MRI post op. None was done. I did have new scans 2yrs later which found a new central cord lesion below the disc that were operated on. It was said to be part of a demyelination disease even tho central cord lesions are usually caused by trauma/injury, as it's mostly gray matter. Demyelination lesion are moreso found in the peripheral part of the spinal cord where it's mostly white matter. But I'm not a neurologist, BUT neither is Dr. Kumar. I went back to see him this years as I sustained a (new) injury at work. He looked the MRI of my spine, which state, "severe stenosis" above the fused part of my spine. He then gleefully informed me that I must had/have a demyelinating disease. His reaction and the other comment of how he "cut/hit" others patients' spinal cord during surgery, really made me wonder. He then wrote a prescription and said I didn't need to see him again. Which is fine by me. Went for second opinion in another city.

Horrific receptionist! Very egotistical. I had two surgeries by this man. First surgery went bad and he would not do any tests or examine me. My family doctor had to get a C.T. Scan. The recommendation from there was to have a MRI. The MRI recommended surgery. 1 1/2 years later he finally looked at the MRI results and then decided I needed surgery. He cut my spinal cord during surgery. I was 24 hours on my back to heal it. Once I was up and around it broke loose again and I lost a large amount of spinal fluid. He had left no standing orders for me at the hospital! The hospital were unable to contact him and were unsuccessful. Finally at the end of the day his receptionist informed the hospital he was out of the country on a holiday! His colleague cane to see me and stitched up the drainage tube after 36 hours on my back I was healed enough to walk and go home! I believe angels in the form of excellent nursing staff saved my life. That and Cranio Sacral therapy. I never want to see this man again and I recommend that others stay clear of him too!! He needs to retire!!

DO NOT SEE THIS MAN!
Nov 2013 - in my surgery, he hit my spinal cord twice and chose to close me up and not contain bleeding from from vertebrae.
I am now a paraplegic from the chest down. I spent nearly a year in Wascana Hospital where I heard of other examples of catastrophic results from his surgeries, a.k.a. poor skills!
FYI: do you know that no one verifies the surgical reports that are written up by the doctors? Hmmmmm !

Dr. Kumar is a very skilled surgeon. I was initially a bit thrown off as he is abrupt and very factual, and I felt like I had to really dig to get information as he does not elaborate a lot [so be prepared with follow up questions]. In the end, he did a fantastic job with my surgery - whatever he lacks in social skills was made up for in technical skills. In addition, his front desk staff is very friendly and helpful and made me feel at ease.

Dr. Kumar was 2 hours late seeing us due to an unforeseen emergency. He was very apologetic to everyone in the waiting room and when we got in to see him, he was excellent. We were the first in and he answered all our questions and took time to explain everything. He did not rush us at all knowing there were a lot more waiting. My husband is needing surgery and he ran through everything including the risks and was very sympathetic to my husband's pain.
