I had him as a family Doctor for a while until he refused to treat my Bronchitis because he "didn't believe in Bronchitis" as well as refusing a referral to specialist for a bladder condition because I was 'too young' to have it. After fighting with another Doctor, I received the referral and the specialist confirmed my diagnoses within minutes. Not only that, the specialist mentioned that half of his patients with this condition are in my age range. If left to Dr. Luykenaar I would have had to live in chronic pain for the rest of my life based off his limited knowledge and personal beliefs.

A good doctor for easy diagnosis. Do not even suggest you may know what is wrong with you.

I have been going to see Dr Luykenaar for many years. The last few times that I've needed to make an appointment with him he is either booked or on vacation, so I have been booked in with other Doctors. I had needed to get a form signed for a work related injury so I had made a appointment, to my surprise I was able to get into see him. When he came in he asked what I needed and then saw on the computer that I had seen this other Dr in the practice. He asked me if that Dr had been my primary Dr and I said well I had seen them a few times. He asked why I hadn't made an appointment with that other Dr and I told him when I called they had told me that the other Dr was busy. He yelled "Well, I'm busy too!!" and stomped out of the room. A few minutes later the other Dr's nurse came in to get me so I could see that other Dr. I was shocked!! That has to be the most unprofessional thing I have ever seen and had no right to treat me the way he did.

Dr Luykenaar's medical approach tends to be formulaic and perfunctory. Sometimes seems attempt to fit complaints to a predetermined diagnosis.

This doctor was on call when I went to the Emergency dept at the Coaldale Health centre, yesterday. After speaking with the nurse, over the phone, he was apparently skilled enough to assess the increasingly painful tightness in my chest. I have chronic Bronchitis and was in desperate need of a prescription for an antibiotic - instead, without ANYBODY having even listened to my chest, he informed the nurse to reassure me that I would be fine and to just go home and turn on a humidifier. Well, doc, by the time I could get a prescrption from one of your collegues(who is obviously in the medical field for the RIGHT reasons - as opposed to whatever reason YOU are in this field for), my chest was in unbearable pain and I now get to look forward to a longer healing time. I realize it was Father's Day but you, sir, have an obligation to uphold the oath you took! Perhaps I know my body just a little better than you do??? My husband and I are seriously thinking about reporting you......

I think he is very good, polite, right to the point. He will take the time to talk with you and explore options and alternatives. If it's not in his field of knowledge he will send you to other Specialist.

He is very quick with the prescriptions, particularly antidepressants when the real problem is something else. It seems like he doesn`t really listen and that patients don`t know anything. Personalble enough, but I want the problem adressed, not sidelined.

My mother in law has gone to him for 20 some years for depresion, being put on cocktails of meds with no long term solution. Finnally found an alternative med that worked wonders. She was off the anti-depressants & was full of life. Dr. Luykenaar without checking into this new med, okayed she go back on some of her other meds.We were back to square one with mom. Depressed, anxiety, ... We went to talk about the situation and were basically told he didn't agree with alternative meds, and no matter how we tried to explain mom's improvements he wanted nothing to do with it. Tried to give him info, he threw it off to the side and said he only belives in scientific evidence. we tried to give him links to medical journals with all the scientific evidence he required & he refused to even look. He obviously doesn't care about our Mothers health, just his own stubborn opinions. Just 'cause he has been a doctor for 35 years doesn't entitle him to that kind of disregard for new effective meds.
