Al Hayashi made a unilateral decision to do an experimental surgery. It failed. He then hated ME because of HIS failure. He has ruined the quality of my life. Massive ego. Beware.

Jeckle and Hyde. I've experienced him both in person and had phone consults/follow-ups as well. Sometimes he is kind, patient, explains well and seems to know his stuff. Other times he insults, cuts you off, makes false assumptions, is rude, and generally makes you feel like a waste of time. I've also wasted a fair amount of time in a waiting room sitting for HOURS after my scheduled appointment time until I am seen (and then rushed) - but that may be the reception / scheduling team or the result of emergencies. The MOA, Suzie, is consistently professional in her communications with me. I am hesitant to go back to this surgeon but not sure if I have other options.

I was expecting a good experience with Dr. Hayashi, as he did my son’s hernia repair in 2005. I was shocked by how rude, argumentative and disrespectful he was. He was very focused on telling me to lose 45 pounds and would not answer my questions without arguing. He really needed to be right for some reason, and went on and on about the keto diet (which he has recently lost 32 pounds on because he wants to eat noodles again, apparently). I have two hernias, as well as a separated abdominal muscle after cancer surgeries. Rather than treating me with empathy, he explained that my insides were like an old ruined sock and I am too fat to fix my hernia. It’s fine to say I need to lose weight to have a more successful surgery, I expected that. However I waited a year to see him and he won’t talk to me again for 6 months, during which time he expects me to lose weight. He told me multiple times that HE decides who gets seen, and he chose to delay my appointment because I am not important. I have made a follow-up appointment but I will be seeking a surgeon who can look me in the eye and treat me with empathy. If you’re overweight or have questions, don’t bother with this doctor. He’s not interested and will declare that to you.

Dr. Hayashi and his assistant were both professional and compassionate. Even though it turned out he couldn't help me with my issue, I felt in good hands.

I had the good fortune to have Dr. Hayashi as my surgeon on two occasions within the span of 6 months and I had the same experience each time...which was Excellent. He has a way of putting you at ease as well as being very professional. He is very personable and has a good sense of humour as well. I felt I was in good hands before the first surgery and felt that even more before the second. Now I have the knowledge that I was right and was in very good hands all along!
