I have been a patient of Dr. Smallberg for over 13 years and have found his expertise in this field to be exempletory! He has been available at all times by telephone whenever I have needed him and has fit me in his tight schedule on a same day basis. I have Spinal Stenosis and Dr. Smallberg recommended the best specialist in Spinal Surgery, Dr. Patrick O'Leary and I have been pain free ever since my operation. Dr. Smallberg has always explained my illness in "layman's terms" and has always taken his time with me in his office so that I would fully understand his diagnosis and recomendations. I have recommended him to members of my family and close friends who all were extrememly pleased with his knowledge and care. As a patient who had been in tremendous back pain and very depressed with my illness, Dr. Smallberg acted as a friend as well as a Doctor,he gave me hope and lifted my spirits reassuring me that I would feel better and my condition would improve, and he was right!

For a successful dr.-patient relationship, you reciprocally need these things: direct and honesty 2-way communication, trust, respect and accountability. When I first met Dr. Smallberg, I had urgent, complicated, severe medical conditions that left no room for error. In his care, I enjoyed the swift efficiency of a first-rate mind coupled with world-class experience shepherding me through a half-dozen interrelated surgeries and after-care encompassing a decade. He used all the verifiable reputable tests that could help diagnose precise causes, and closely tailored constructive and conservative treatments. He was open about the pros & cons, & efficacy of various approaches, while maintaining a balance between professionalism and one-on-one caring. He never once was unresponsive, even when it meant off-hours emergencies (and there were many). I owe my recovery in large part to his patient care.

The initial visit to Dr. Smallberg cost $1,550.00. For that, he gave 40 minutes, which included a physical examination and review of MRIs for severe lower back pain. He was unclear of the cause and recommended further MRIs. During this first visit, he was interested, caring, and not rushed. On the return visit (another $250), he spent less than 10 minutes and said the new MRIs did not show the reason for the pain. His diagnosis was Pyriformis Syndrome, but we have since learned that the symptoms of this syndrome are not consistent with our symptoms. We believe he didn't know the reason for the pain and advised of this Syndrome because he really has no idea what is causing the pain. At the return visit, he was rushed, seemed uninterested and certainly uncaring. In summary, we expected far more, as he was highly recommended by a world-class orthopedic surgeon.
