I met dr Mrkonjic by accident…
She was the surgeon on call to repair my femur head fracture following an XC ski fall. In the past year I’ve seen her 5 times for post surgery follow up.
My hip is mostly healed according to the X- rays and I’m slowly getting back to pre accident activities. To be fair, I’m grateful to Dr Mrkonjic for her experience, knowledge and performance as a surgeon.
She fails horribly at kindness, general empathy and bedside manner. I will never forget how insulting and unkind she was at my bedside pre surgery and the first appointments- 2&6 weeks later. This is when you are most vulnerable, in so much pain and totally dependent on the medical system to help you.
The follow up system at the cast clinic at Foothills is very well set up for appointments and Dr Mrkonjic spent an appropriate amount of time with me at each appointment.
I had a few questions which at times were adequately answered and at others were met with condescending remarks - mostly body shaming: I’m 40 lbs overweight but not the manatee I was made to feel like under her care.
She was also not forthcoming and rather dismissive of physiotherapy in the early weeks of my recovery. I attribute much of the success of my recovery to the physiotherapy journey and the 2 practitioners who invested time and care in devising strategic exercises every 3 weeks for a full year.
Do your own homework/ collaborate with other practitioners and set your expectations appropriately with this Dr. No warm fuzzies to be had here.

I waited for months for my appointment, I am in so much pain can hardly walk. She didn't explain anything to me but refused to operate only because I couldn't pick my legs up to walk. Common sense, how could I walk normally if I am stiff with pain . Really disappointed. Waste of time. Please avoid her. She has no manners. She is here only because of our tax money. Something should be done about her attitude.

Dr Mrkonjic is dismissive and lacks empathy. I’m 16 weeks in recovery for a 12 week injury and she dismisses all questions and concerns I gave. I’m good to go back to work full time but not ready for physio?! Not impressed with this Dr at all.

Quite dismissive and not the best bed side manner. It seems that patient experiences vary, not consistent. Questions are thorough, but empathy was lacking. I arrived enthused to learn more, but left feeling discouraged and unsupported.

After reading many reviews I figured I still wanted to see her. The negative reviews pointed to her being too abrupt and not too communicative. I saw her today. We didn’t talk a lot. She explained my X-rays. I took a picture of my X-ray. She told me no surgery was required and she’d see me again in 4 weeks for a follow up. No driving and no weight on my bad ankle. She then noticed me crying and asked me what was my biggest concern. I told her I was so happy not to need surgery as we were flying to Mexico for Christmas. She said there’d be no problem with me going. On December 13 I should be able to start putting weight on my ankle. I’m so thankful to her.

Had a meniscus tear repair by Dr Mrkonjic. She was not forthcoming as to what she did, no info as to exercises after surgery, and was not in favour of physiotherapy. I had bloody fluid running down my leg for 3 days and after a call she told me to put a bandaid on it. It had soaked through the 3” of gauze she put on. Would definitely NOT recommend!

I had arthroscopic surgery with Dr. Mrkonjic after a very long road of trying to be "heard" by other sports medicine physicians. Dr. Mrkonjic was absolutely amazing. I found her to be extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, and professional. I am currently 8 weeks post surgery and I feel like I have my life back, all thanks to Dr. Mrkonjic who took the time to listen and understand that I had been living in constant knee pain for years. I am grateful for this surgery and I would recommend this physician to anyone.

Any questions I had for her were met with condescending responses about how she is the professional and she knows what she’s doing. I’m sorry but this is my body and if you are going to operate on me, You better be able to answer every single question I have.

The absolute worst doctor I have ever experienced. She refused surgery on my torn Achilles and casted it for months instead, which permanently atrophied my heal pad. I went to a ‘real’ orthopaedic surgeon and had my Achilles rebuilt but have permanent heal damage. Avoid her like the plague.
