I've rated Dr. Korpassy years ago, but I will again. Almost 15 years ago I was brought into Dr. Korpassy's office by a desperate mother. I had been diagnosed as BPD, had done therapy through McGill and medicated through the the psychiatrist there, Dr, Franck, who did not strike me as someone who particularly cared for his patients. The therapy was helpful, and helped me managed my abandonment issues better, but my moods continued to shift and I was in constant mental anguish and pain, psychotic episodes (not full psychosis but serious freakouts, often). Dr. Korpassy acknowledged the very possible BPD but pointed towards something more significant, a diagnosis and treatment which saved my life. Bipolar II, rapid cycling. Dr. Korpassy wasn't your typical psychiatrist or doctor, he put time and effort to give advice and also therapy in his meetings. We tried anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers of every kind because I was adamant on avoiding Lithium. Fellow bipolars, if you have a good psychiatrist like Dr. Korpassy, do not be afraid. I one day came into his office and went "ok-- give me the Lithium and I'll take a chance on my kidneys and thyroid", he told me that with regular blood tests I would be safe, and he was right. He also told me a few years on it and some pathways would be rebuilt in my brain and I may no longer need it. Again, he was right. After 6 years we did a blood test, I was doing very well mentally, and for some reason despite my taking it, it had dropped to almost zero in my system... and I still felt good. So we dropped the Lithium and kept me on a low dose of Lamotrigine, Wellbutrin. It's also thanks to him that I was diagnosed for my ADHD and treated properly to be able to manage my life. I didn't want amphetamines so he suggested Ritalin, which has been my saviour for concentration and organization for years now.
I started seeing him I was about 20 years old. I'm going on 33. When I came into his office the first day, and he knows who I am if he's reading this, I was a complete mess of a girl with BPD, GAD, ADHD, Bipolar II rapid cycling, OCD (managed), PTSD. None of these issues can be fixed entirely but with someone like Dr. Korpassy, 13 years later, I have a wonderful relationship, I went back to school and started a successful career that is advancing rapidly, I am happy( my moods while they of course fluctuate, are managed and not painful as they used to be. We have a dog, 3 cats, many positive goals, a nice place to live, and we help each other grow. My relationships with friends and family are better than every.
None of this would have been possible without the amazing help of Dr. Korpassy for well over a decade. I will forever be thankful. I wish you a wonderful and very well-deserved retirement sir, and I know that you have saved this life, and that can't be undone. Your tools and tips are forever with me. I will miss you as a psychiatrist, but I hope to speak to you as a human again one day. Again, thank you for everything. You are truly the best.
