I still have nightmares and get triggered when thinking about Dr. Rabin. In the mid-1980's my parents were engaged in a bitter divorce. My mother was mentally unstable, had violent rages, and repeatedly threatened to commit suicide. On multiple occasions she threatened to kill my sister and me as well so "that ba$tard won't win." She engaged in parental alienation and told us that our father was trying to have her killed and would have me and my sister sent to strangers where no one would ever find us just to spite her. This was extremely traumatizing in addition to being bullied and physically assaulted at school and sexually assaulted by an adult neighbor as I walked through a field. I was accused of deliberately causing trouble to cost her money in the settlement because I was 'taking my dad's side' and wanted to hurt her and my sister. I was taken to Dr. Rabin with the express purpose of showing that my father was the problem and as leverage for a larger settlement. Dr. Rabin should have recognized the signs of a mentally ill adult when they went in and spent the entire initial session trashing their child and telling him that they were the cause of all the problems in the house. Dr. Rabin told me that my mother expressly asked him to have me locked up in the 6th Floor Psych Ward of St. Joe's hospital in Elgin and that all he needed was for me to give him a reason. He sat there eating grapes and smacking his lips like a pig while I could not speak because I feared him. This went on for several sessions where the man threatened me to attempt to get me to talk. Dr. Rabin was aware of the sexual assault and told me I had somehow caused it because I was acting out - not because this man was a sexual predator who would eventually be convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of another child. Dr. Rabin could see signs of trauma, including dissociation, yet he was focused on my behavior and not the causes behind it. My experience with Dr. Rabin was so traumatizing I was unable to trust a therapist again for nearly 30 years when I was finally diagnosed with C-PTSD. This man should not be allowed around vulnerable children.
