Beware of this Doctors Office.
What we did learn is that they were going to perform a TURP. I did not know at that time there were MAJOR significant side effects from that surgery. Sure, they can get my husband to urinate, but they could not guarantee the side effect. They seem to gloss over what the real issues after surgery could be. There was a word salad at the meeting with the P.A. Upon conversations about what quality of life my husband would have, we decided that I would call and speak to the nurse for the P.A.
As I questioned her about the side effects. She asked if I Googled this. I sternly replied that no, I did not, but my husband and I were reading Medical Journals from Ivy League Colleges and top medical centers. I should say both my husband and I are well educated. She kept insisting that I Googled the information. I told her the medical journals and she made it seem that she did not know what a medical journal was and did not know these popular Ivy league medical schools and hospitals. She had no answers with what she had seen in her experience. But this is what she did tell us.
Most people that have this surgery are incontinent for a period of time. From days to maybe forever. There will be diapers for my husband in his future. For how long she could not tell, it depended on him and his scare tissue. Mind you, he has no scare tissue, so it would be from the surgeon.-red flag number one.
When I asked about the mental statue of men that had to wear diapers, she claims she never heard of such a thing. Hence, no reading of the journals. Annoyed at me for asking if they could help with the incontinence, she stated why would they do that, when the problem was that he could not urinate. Why stop him from that or try to control it. When I stated that most men would not want to wear a diaper, she told me “You have no idea, how many men wear a diaper.” Really?
At this moment I knew my husband’s quality of life would be a crapshoot. Urinating on himself maybe for years, let alone there would be no intimacy. Pain. Feeling disgrace.
She lacked compassion for men in general and knowledge of the patients well being as a whole.
As my husband was doing research on whether this archaic surgery that they offer at the group would be right for him, he developed issues with his catheter. Monday morning, I called for him to see a nurse to have it changed, I spoke to the office manager and left a message for the nurse of the P.A. I asked that they call me, for my husband frequently gets tied up at work and can’t answer his phone.
At this point my husband knew something was very wrong. All day no call back. The nurse K****e finally called back my husband at 3:00PM. This was the woman who personally assured me in front of others if my husband had a problem with his catheter, to call and they would quicky take care of it.
My husband started to tell her what happened, and this was her response. K****e stated today is Monday and they don’t change catheters on Mondays. No matter how my husband asked, she stated in an authoritative tone, “catheters are painful, and you have to get used to it” . But she would do him a favor and would send numbing pills to the pharmacy to help him till the 11th (remember today was the 2nd) when his appointment was to change the catheter. Basically, telling my husband to man up. I swear this woman gets a thrill of holding men under her thumb and causing pain in their lives and probably destroying them. There seems like there is something other going on with her. Apparently doctors and nurses don’t get that people hire them. They are paid for their services, just like a car mechanic. I don’t know what type of person would allow another to talk to them as she did with my husband. She never once asked what the symptoms were, she was just annoyed that he had a complaint. Little did she know what was really happening to him medically.
I called back and was given word salads and a run around with no direct answers on how they knew it wasn’t an infection. But they stated that they knew he was fine and after pressing, over and over, they said, we could see him in a couple of days.
A couple of days? Really. We made a trip to the E.R. and learnt (all the time my husband and I knew) he had an infection. That infection could have turned into sepsis. If he had taken those numbing pills, and listened to K****e, he would have never had the symptom of not being able to urinate, because he had a catheter. He would have been very sick, and it could lead to a fatal condition. We ended with a large co-pay for the E.R. when we had a doctor that could not take time, nor care to tend to their own patient.
When the office was contacted the next day, there was a defensive stance, with no apologizes or concern for their patient. Just my husband should not have complained, especially on the days they don’t do new catheters.

One of the best DRs I have had the pleasure of seeing. Never in too big of a hurry to answer questions. The entire staff is top notch as well. Will send my friends to him in a heartbeat.

Best experience I have had with a doctor, and his staff. Staff is always very polite and professional, and scheduled appt. and always are met at the scheduled times. Dr. Harrison is always professional, he listen to you and take as much time as you need with him. He performed surgery on me, and he took al the time that I needed to explain in detail everything about the surgery as well as what to expect after surgery. Very good bedside manners.
