My experience with Dr Shaver was very negative indeed!
I was very upset at his abrasive tone and his lack of any explanation of any thing that I asked him
He heard me ask the assistant about the masks and he immediately said that he will refer me to another doctor and that I can leave immediately
He stressed that it was his clinic and that he made the rules He honestly made me very upset at his arrogant tone and his lack of any info that I wanted from him
He kept saying that I should go to my optometrist to get answers
The cataract that I had removed 3 months prior caused me lots of trouble The eye became inflamed and I had to visit an ophthalmologist in Palm Desert who gave me drops and lots of advice.
I will never go back to Dr. Shaver. If I have my other eye done it will be done by a different surgeon

I have twice been referred to Dr. Shaver from the hospital after evening visits. Both times I was provided with next-day first-thing appointments. Both times I was quickly packed off for surgery. After returning from surgery (Van. and Vic. respectively) I was called in very soon for unscheduled appointments to see how my eyes were doing. This is good care.
I have had a couple of other appointments also. I agree with most others he is without polish on his bedside manner. What he communicates is the problem, the solution, and the path between the two. Don't expect intermediate fluff or psychological support, or indeed you will be disappointed. I was the first time. Now I'm sort of amused. Five stars as I'm more interested in care than manner.
My experiences with staff (who do provide fluff and context) have been quite good. Punctuality I have found better than most DR.s, and as before immediate and supplemental appointments were scheduled so this was excellent. As I may well have been the cause of some people having delayed appointments I'm in no place to criticize waiting a number of minutes once for a delayed appointment myself. I don't have the knowledge to rate his knowledge, so I haven't, but it's a whole lot better than mine. And so far he's been bang-on. It appears I have to rate Knowledge. So I will provide the rating that two local MD.s have given me in his regard.

Staff was obliging but the feel of a "pompous a-s" was in the air .. and then he arrived in the room to confirm my feelings. No greeting, no introduction just a few short eye checks and the lecture began. I was amazed that a so called surgeon had zero personality skills or respect for his patients. What part of the patients are filling his pockets does he not understand! If your looking to be belittled and or want to meet a real live living pompous a-s, make sure your get yourself and appointment with this guy ..

The very worst experience I have ever had with a doctor. Rude, impatient and uncaring barely describe this doctor. Bullying not only myself but his nurse attending the lazer surgery as well.

Totally not good! No...actually, the WORST medical experience I have ever had. First off, for the person who does the pre screening, to obviously not even really look at my chart from the previous visit is not impressive. She asked me if there were any issues with the dilating drops and I said no because the first time I went there, the ladies were super nice and helpful and told me numbing drops were going to be put in my eyes first so the dilating drops weren't going to sting as much. THIS TIME...OMG...rubbing a bar of lye soap across my eyes would have felt better. And then to say "Oh, I guess I should have put the other drops in first". Then to tell me when I am reporting the difference from my first appointment to my second appointment (7 weeks later), I am told "Too much information". WHAT???!!! Am I not supposed to be telling you what is happening?? STRIKE ONE. Now on to the "specialist". To say my eyes are OK and to come back in one year if there is any change was like a slap in the face! Seriously,,,were you not listening?? I just told you 4 other issues regarding my vision since the last visit. Then to sit there with your arms folded and laugh because you have heard it all before about floaters, when I am trying to explain what is happening,,,,not impressed!! STRIKE TWO. I am then handed a pamphlet and told to read it. Everything I need to know is in there. WOW!!! Can this not be explained to me in person since I am sitting right there??? What am I, invisible? And here's the clincher...still sitting in the chair with his arms crossed, he says, "Can I go now?" WHAT??? I was totally stunned. I told him, "YEAH, YOU CAN GO NOW AND SO AM I!!" STRIKE THREE. I felt I was so bullied, disrespected, berated, and treated like I was a dollar sign instead of someone who is terrified I may lose my sight. When you go to a medical practitioner, you would think they would have a little more empathy to understand you are terrified of not knowing what is happening to you. Why not trying giving some undivided attention to the patient in front of you instead of overbooking soooooo many patients in one day? I guess the almighty dollar is more important to him than the oath he took to help you.

Staff great
Worst medical practioner I have experienced since I was verbally abused by an alcoholic dentist in a small town when I was 9 years old. I am 72 now. Many comments here about his poor or lack of bedside manner. He gave me no warning of what he was going to do or what it would feel like. Just stuffed a wet something in my eye and started slathering it around. I lived a life where I have experienced pain. I KNOW WHAT HURT IS
I told him it hurt. He told me not to be ridiculous and he was just washing my eye. He went back at it. I jumped at the deep hurt and said "goddammit that hurts" he said I was ridiculous, it did not hurt ,he would not proceed with someone swearing at him" I consider the pressure he applied already knowing he had hurt me (even denied he had hurt me) ABUSE.
Other than those who have given him 5 out of 5 the rest of us found him unprofessional at least and abusive as common
This man does not deserve to practice no matter how educated or skilled. His so called poor bedside manner was simply bullying abuse.

I waited 1.5 hours past my appointment time to see Dr. Shaver. The desk staff did not communicate why or how much longer it would be. I understand that there are probably patients with far more pressing needs than mine and delays can happen, but it would be nice to have that communicated to me.
The doctor did not say hello or introduce himself. He asked me how to pronounce the name of my last specialist and when he tried to pronounce it himself he laughed. He diagnosed me with a serious eye disease and gave me minimal information on how to treat it. He did not tell me how it happened, long term effects, or what I should avoid doing or eating.
When I asked him for clarification on why he found something, in his words, "Incredible", he said "I just do".
After the short appointment in his office he led me to another office and told me to wait there. After a few minutes I asked the receptionist if my appointment with the doctor was over and she told me it was. Just as there had been no opening salutation, there was no ending either.
I left feeling stunned and quite frightened that I would have to deal with this man again for the affliction that I have.

I see a lot of people using this forum to abuse medical practitioners and to flaunt their own ignorance of Covid protocols. Some people have to work hard to be seen as rude & ignorant - all you anti-vaxxers - you seem to have been born that way.

Regular follow up visit to make sure my eyes are healthy. What is the problem. You come to your appointment on time, wear a mask (it is required, the same as it you went out for dinner and they would not serve you with out a tie). The receptionists do their job. Check you in, confirm your information, Take a seat. Your get your eyes checked by a tech.person. Drops in your eyes. May have some vision tests See Dr. Shaver. He the ophthalmologist not my buddy I trust that he will exam my eyes , tell me what I need to know , I what his knowledge not a friendly chat. Easy Peasy What is the problem????
