I'm looking for another doctor now. i get nothing from my visits with Dr. Shum. Yes, he's very , nice, polite, friendly, etc. as other reviewers have mentioned. But, he doesn't offer anything. The exams are too brief (less than 15 min) & he never has any solutions for any problems. Never asks me any questions about my health. I always feel like I wasted my time when I leave. WebMD is more useful!

He seemed very disinterested. I'm surprised he has good reviews. I'm not at all demanding so I can only assume others are satisfied with minimal care. It's a volume practice. One reviewer wrote "speedy". That's for sure!! I felt so rushed I didn't even put my socks back on.
He honestly wasn't helpful at all. There is no follow up whatsoever. Very disappointed. I don't care if he went to Johns Hopkins or not. A fancy diploma doesn't necessarily make a good doctor. I'm trying to add something positive so I will say that he has a friendly manner - but that's not enough in a doctor. 1 star.

If I could describe Dr Shum in just a few words, I would say "good listener", "down-to-earth" and "competent". Believe it or not, but not many doctors are not like that, they like to listen to themselves more than to the patients! I have been with Dr Shum for 8 years now (when I first came to New York) and am hoping for many more. In addition to the qualities I mentioned above, he knows (obviously) what he is doing and has always helped me with any kind of problem that I had. I don't feel uncomfortable to tell him about anything. Sometimes when I have needed an appointment urgently, he has always tried to accommodate me. Wait times are usually very low. And if I have specific requests he always listens and does his best to accommodate me (as long as they are within reason). I would recommend Dr Shum to anyone who is seeking a doctor that you can trust for the long term.

Dr. Shum was very efficient. I went to him for the first time and my exam took about 10-15 minutes with about less than 5 minutes of waiting time. He was very speedy in his exam but I never felt rushed. My wrist was bothering me when I went to see him. He told me to get a cream for it that turned out to be wonderful and got rid of the problem. He also gave me a referral for a hand specialist in case the problem persists. The ONLY complain that I have was the scale. It's not the one used in the gym or other doctors (the one with a height measuring gadget) that I've been to so I'm not entirely sure of its accuracy since my home scale (often tends to be off) shows the same amount.

I was very pleasantly surprised after meeting Dr. Shum. He was friendly, down-to-earth and easy to talk to. I went for a routine physical and blood work, and he was speedy, thorough and accommodating (I called to reschedule my appointment the day of). Overall, great doctor! (On a side note, he is a Johns Hopkins graduate, in case that matters to people when selecting a doctor.)

Dr. Chi Shum is an exemplary model of a physician with an extremely caring demeanor and wonderful bed side manner. He has a small, cramped and extremely busy office, but he has the uncanny ability to shut out the surroundings to give each patient his undivided attention. I went to him the first time for a problem that had perplexed a few specialists, and an internist who knew me for more than 30 years. Dr. Shum's fresh approach found the problem quickly and has made me very happy. Bravo!
