Recognized breast tumour by palpation that had been missed by x-ray, ultrasound, and needle biopsy. Removed breast & possible lymph nodes involved--tumour was over 5 cm. Very respectful during physical exam & during followup consults, comfortable with my spouse in the room, listened to how I was able to feel the tumour and adapated his palpation according; knew when to ignore the 3 false negative lab reports, informed me fully of options. Sense of humour with the anesthetist in the surgical suite was appreciated. The man has knowing fingers, focuses on the disease. I'm alive 10 years later thanks to his expertise and experience.

Dr. Selman is what is wrong with our health system. Not only was he rude and dismissive, he was also very inappropriate. I filled out the required paper work prior to seeing him, which included all details regarding any previous operations I may have had. This included 2 c-sections and an appendectomy. He had already made up his mind that I was more of a nuisance than anything and was very dismissive and rude upon entering the room. He obviously didn't read the paperwork because he didn't see my c-section scars. After I informed him that I did in fact have 2 c-sections, he was even ruder (if possible) and tapped on my stomach with his index finger and said "this was in the way" and that's why he didn't see the scars. Let it be known that I am 135 lbs, I have had 2 children. I felt embarassed and belittled. This is a person who has taken an oath. If he is unable to be professional, perhaps he should reassess the oath he took and change professions, or take an ethics class!

Terrible bed side manner. When he asked if I had any questions, just before going to operating table to get gallbladder out. I asked if I should follow-up with the surgeon I had been seeing before I became an emergency. He became very angry and said I was not that other surgeons "problem", I was now his "problem". He was yelling at me. I then had to go back to the hospital to get a stronger medication from him after being released. He was again very rude. The only time he was pleasant was when he was on his way out the door to go golfing. I think he consider retiring ASAP.

When I first went to Dr. Selman, I thought his bed side manner was different,but after I kept going back to him, he was very good to me, did my gall bladder operation, and at the time, I did not have a good family doc, the family doc I had at the time, didnt he come to see me the whole time I was in the hospital, and Dr. Selman offered to see take care of me until i found a family Doc. He ended up giving me the name of a family doc. I had for over 10 years till I moved, I appreciate Dr. Selman, I even requested him to do my bowel Resection. Thank you Helen Colborne

I was admitted to Emerg at RGH after a traumatic fall at home. I was initially seen in an Urgent care facility in Southern Alberta, where the attending physician did a minimal exam and sent me home with some pain med's for what he believed were cracked ribs. Well, after passing out at home and several times through the evening, a911 call and an ambulance ride to RGH, it was discovered that I had ruptured my spleen and was bleeding quite significantly internally. Dr Selman performed the surgery that night to save my life. He was professional, knowledgeable, and in my case established a great rapport and bedside manner with me both before and following the surgery. I would not hesitate to refer family or friend to this man...

It's amazing how he puts up with all the rubes and hayseeds in Southern Alberta and that he can still do his job despite the horrible level of basic biologic understanding people here actually have

2 very negative experiences. 1. lancing boil on my rear end. GP said he'd do it,but without a general pain would be too great. Sent me to hospital. Selman refused to give me the general,did it with only a local. Injection alone hurt like #%*#; when he started digging around I nearly lost my mind.Pain was so severe I dropped to the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy:Survival. Almost uncontrollable urge to attack him and protect myself. It was sadistic. 150 years,at least I'd get a bullet to bite. Never paid attention to his name. Years later a surgeon screwed up my hernia surgery. I realized it was the same guy! After the surgery,the nerve in my right thigh went haywire. Incredible pain with slightest movement. Had to remain prone. He made me wait in his waiting room for two hours like that! (hard to remain prone!) No apology. Obvously, no concern for my state. There's more, but no space. Best advice:avoid. Still regret not suing.

Very proffesional. He removed my gallbladder 2 weeks post-pardum. Somehwat arrogant, but I agree with earlier posts that most surgeons are somewhat arrogant. He explained the entire procedure to me and what I would feel like after the surgery. He was sure to put me on a pain-killer that was safe for my baby while nursing. He came to see me after the surgery was over to be sure to go over post-operative things that I would need to do at home (I went home early-my choice) to be with my newborn. I think a Dr. should be rated for is qulifications, not personality.
