We had a procedure on November 26, 2019 at the Verde Valley Medical Center. About a month later, around the end of December, I received a bill for $107.38 for the reading. I also received a bill for about $450 from the hospital.
I applied for financial aid on February 4 from the hospital to try and receive a discount paying these bills. The average person in America cannot afford medical bills, far and away the priciest on the planet. I discovered yesterday that about the same time as I was applying for financial aid that Northern Arizona Radiology had sent this bill to collections.
Sending a health care bill to collections so quickly seems coldhearted, cruel, vicious, greedy, calculated, and just plain mean. It reminds me of Martin Shkreli who bought, Daraprim, a life-saving drug, and immediately raised the price 5000%. Is it any wonder that someone like Bernie Sanders is getting such traction and patients no longer look at doctors is their friend?
Northern Arizona Radiology seems to be a slick moneymaking corporate enterprise euphemistically called American “healthcare”. In reality, it is cold hard capitalism at its worst; nothing to do with health and everything to do with maximizing profits. It saddened me to look at the Arizona Corporation Commission website and see that two doctors, Dr. Ken Salce and Stephen Ward, are in charge of this enterprise.
In future, I will do everything possible to never, ever give Northern Arizona Radiology any business and will make sure to tell people our story. If it means doing a little research and going to Prescott or Phoenix for healthcare then so be it. In addition, this has definitely decided my vote for November.
