My 5 year old was referred here by our pediatrician for ongoing light sensitivity/redness/irritation. Exam started off OK and he was certainly pleasant. When it came time to exam my son’s eyes closer and became nervous, Hawkeswood became quickly agitated and lost patience within a minute of his attempts. He then stated “well this isn’t going to happen” and ended the exam. He then said in a negative manner that “well he is a shy boy” right in front of him, shaming him on the spot.
He then went on to reprimand me about our use of moisturizer in the home as I told him yes we do use an eczema cream for him as he has diagnosed eczema and needs it routinely on his upper back/arms. He then stated any cream like this will get on his hands and face and irritate his eyes. We apply the cream for him though so this assumption was not correct. He then looked at me and stated “I can tell you must use a lot of moisturizer in the house, I can see it on your face too.”
Again another incorrect assumption and uncalled for. Very awkward situation. I’m sure he’s very knowledgeable and experienced in his field but stepped out of line with his assumptions and comments. I’m sure he’s fine working with adults and older children but absolutely do not recommend for younger children or someone that can get nervous for an exam. I’m sure he doesn’t care in the slightest, is quite elderly and nearing the end of his career but think about how you’re speaking about a young child right in front of them. Thanks.
