After spending the last two years in a state of constant depression and anxiety going through the public mental health system with absolutely no relief and paying thousands in medical bills to maintain my mental health (going down holistic pathways and trialing so many medications I have lost count). I finally saw a private psychiatrist in 2023 who diagnosed me with bi-polar 11 disorder. Ever since then I have been apprehensive about my diagnosis as I have not responded to any of the prescribed medications and was constantly in a state of depressive episodes with no lift in mood. Finally, my family sought out private health insurance (despite not being able to afford it) and I was referred to the Melbourne Clinic to do an in-patient stay where I was confident that I was finally going to be professionally reviewed, listened to and assured of my symptoms.

This experience has been the complete antithesis of that, I was assigned to Dr Julien Hughes, who if you look up his reviews you will find extremely distressed patients complaining of his complete and utter lack of empathy in communication, inability to remember what was covered in the previous sessions, extremely rushed and arrogant manner - not to mention his visits at 10pm in the evening when I was sedated and unable to articulate my thoughts - perhaps this is his preferred method of treating so the patient isn't able to cognitively respond. These reviews do not stand as ‘mentally ill’ people complaining, they are all synonymous with the lived experiences of all the other patients I met staying here under his care, all appalled and distressed. Throughout the time here I had to be in constant contact with my referring psychiatrist who scoped him out and blatantly told me that he “was not the right doctor for me”, in the end she was on the phone to him instructing him medically what to do with my medication. When I communicated this to the nurses several times they explained I would have to be discharged and re-referred to see another doctor at the clinic, although I was entitled to ask for a second opinion. He was aggressively rude to me when I suggested this and told me that the second opinion would just “agree with my notes'' and that I have to have bi-polar disorder due to the fact that it runs in my family (despite the fact that I have never had a manic episode or elevated mood), hence why I was admitted in the first place.

He also encouraged me to drop out of university multiple times, and spend three quarters of the sessions going on tangents completely unrelated to my mental health - this did not come across as a means to connect with me but felt like he was filling in time. In addition to this, several of their own staff members have agreed with me that there are many complaints against him that surpass any other doctor that works at this clinic. It makes me wonder why I got in so quickly as he must be available due to patients discharging themselves as soon as they meet him. The second opinion I am entitled to is someone he referred to, so no doubt they will be doing him a favor in backing up his medical negligence and incompetence. It is no fault of the nurses as they have shown much sympathy and understanding of my frustration however, the whole experience has been detrimental to my mental health, put me in a constant state of anxiety and increased my need to take PRNS frequently. I am making the decision to discharge myself early because staying here under his care would be a complete and utter waste of time.

Does he understand how much of a step it is to come in as a patient in a hospital after years of battling mental illness only to be so discouraged that going home to self medicate would be a better alternative? If anyone stays at the Melbourne Clinic, especially a young person and is allocated Dr Julien Hughes as a psychiatrist I would save your time and money and wait until a doctor who you have researched is in contact.

I visited Dr Hughes a while back in 2013. The only good thing he did for me was to give me a prescription for an anti depressant (for which I give ONE star), but after a few months, I decided to return to an old psychologist and begged her - I emailed her about how horrible Dr Hughes was and she accepted me back without hesitation and helped me vastly while I continued my medication.
Dr Hughes made me wait long times constantly, and I paid full price for only 30-20 minutes of discussion, of which was of random questions about my culture which was not relevant to my suicidal depression. When I told him that I was quitting his sessions due to his chronic lateness, trying to make me stay longer so he could charge me full price, and filling in the session with inane questions, he had no apologies. Disgusting.

Dr Julian Hughes is the worst psychiatrist I have ever met, he was detrimental to my mental health. He should not be allowed to treat and is dangerous to everyone's well-being

Dr Hughes has proven his knowledge of the brain and promptly helped me through my struggles. He even offered me a free endoscopy. He did not just see me for my money but made sure to guide along my journey of growth of a better person.

Julian Hughes saw my dauhter through the Melb Clinic and never again would I allow him to treat her. Appalling human and appalling doctor. Visiting patients at 10pm at night, females, in their room, with no nurse is unethical and should not be allowed and frankly is proefessionally questionable and when he was questioned on it blatantly lied about it. In fact when questioned on a lot of things he did that was not professaional, lied about a lot of it. When even the nurses confirmed the lies and confrimed the truth I refused to let him anywhere near my daughter. Do yourself a favour and shop around. Just because he's allocated to your erson doesn't mean you need to stick to him. There's a reason he's so available and a reason theres so many awful reviews about him.
