He is doctor who wants to pressure you into surgery more than he wants to get to a correct diagnosis. I would recommend anyone considering seeing him to get a second opinion from a surgeon, preferably not from a surgeon in the department he heads, since they will not feel like they can say anything. He recommended removing my ovary and possibly uterus, and pushed me to do this asap because I could die of cancer.
The second and third opinions I got: you almost definitely do not have cancer. They were right. I had surgery, kept my reproductive organs inside me where they belong. I almost did not get a second opinions because he tried to scare me into getting the surgery that very week.
My sister who came with me pointed out that his fingers were so thick he had trouble handling his business cards when they fell on the floor. He is someone who might have made a decent doctor, but would advise anyone against letting him ue a scalpel on you.

Dr. Abu-Rustum is the gold standard. Simply the BEST! I underwent a radical trachelectomy in 2008 and in 2016 had a minimally invasive procedure done by him. He is kind, compassionate and brilliant. ALL of the nurses in MSKCC commented about how amazing he is. He came to visit me BEFORE my procedure to make sure I was okay and to ask if I had any questions. My nurse said that she'd been at MSKCC for over 30 years and he is one of the few surgeons who sees patients before surgery. I trust him implicitly. If you are diagnosed with cancer, and are able to see Dr. Abu-Rustum, you are one of the lucky ones.

Dr. Abu Rustum is everything you could want in a doctor. He is kind and gentle, so you feel at ease in his presence and can relax regarding whatever procedure you have to have done. He is very skilled and knowledgeable, so you know you are in good hands. I'm actually looking forward to seeing him again soon even though cancer is scary, it helps having such a wonderful and kind doctor.

I've met many GYN/ONC in NYC and in Westchester County and I never felt comfortable with any of them. They had me dead by 40 from the BRCA 1 mutation and visiting their offices just added to my stress and increased my anxieties. I am so happy that I met Dr. Abu-Rustum last week. He treated me like a person, cared, took a lot of time with me because I was nervous wreck, and he gave me the stats and info I needed in order to make the right decision about removing my ovaries prophylactically. Brilliant man with awesome bedside manner. I hardly even felt the pelvic exam! When the time is right, I will have surgery with him.
