I heard he's retired now. Not sure if it is true or not but it's god because everyone (his patients, his nurses) we all hate this A- hole

Been his patient for 5+ years. His skills are 1/10. Attitude is 0/10. What's not to like? If I was you I would beg my GP for a different referral to a real doctor

This idiot was not aware of the latest rheumatoid arthritis tests (anti CCP for example). I had to explain these to him. He seems ready to retire and relax. But I guess he loves easy money from his job too much

Worst experience I've ever had with a specialist. Not the least bit helpful, told me I was "no spring chicken and quite old to be diagnosed with SLE" I had just turned 30. He refused to give any advice regarding going off the meds (which had a multitude of side-effects. After the 4th time, in the same visit, of telling me "if you want to take yourself off, take yourself off." I'm no expert, but there are meds that you have to wean yourself off of...thoroughly disgusted with the treatment I was given.

Was one of my favorite rheumatologists. Saw him back when he had his office in mayfair. His office staff was lovely and never had too much of a wait. Found he was always willing to listen and look after your needs and took the time to get to know you. Would always ask if you were ok with seeing med students instead of just assuming that you would be alright with it. Also would refer you out if you needed it.

This is not a fake rating - Dr. Penney was my rheumatologist for over 30 years. I never posted a rating for him, and when I stumbled onto this site, I was horrified at some of the ones here. I feel obligated to post my view.
I started to see Dr. Penney in the 1980's. I was in denial that I had SLE Lupus and Sjogrens, but I continued to see him once a year (I did not live in Calgary). However, in 2001 my Lupus took over my life, and I became disabled. The local internal medicine doctor helped me, but within months he said I was beyond his expertise. He consulted with Dr. Penney, and it was decided that Dr. Penney would actively monitor my Lupus again going forward.
Dr. Penney put me on the right medications, and referred me to other excellent specialists, which I required over time. He was professional, attentive, and allowed me time to present my concerns and questions. I saw him often, but I always prepared notes and updates. I saw happy, and grumpy, and focused.
With the help of Dr. Penney, I went on long term disability and CPP-Disability. Although my CPP-Dis was instantly approved (because of him), he was also key in many legal battles over the years to retain my LTD, as the insurance company was relentless in trying to stop my disability benefits.
After 30 years, Dr. Penney told me he was getting closer to retirement, and would be referring me to another rheumatologist. I was saddened, but it was time.
Life goes on, and the rheumatologist he chose as his replacement for me is wonderful! I will always remember Dr. Penney as a thoughtful and caring physician, and appreciate everything he did for me.

Yes it took some time to see him after being referred by my family doctor, yes I had to wait some time in the waiting room to be seen by Dr. Penney. I thought he was thorough in the examination, professional and compassionate. I am not the type of person who is "looking for my hand to be held" just the facts.

I waited an extremely long amount of time to see this specialist as you do for most. Over a year. Then in the waiting room he was over an hour late to actually have me in his office. I took out my phone out of curiosity and timed my appointment with him. From the time I stood up and walked back to his office and met with him till I left was four minutes. That includes walking time in both directions. He told me when I sat down that I had seen other doctors who had done a overly thorough assessment and testing of me. So instead of getting my symptoms, history and doing his job he told me that I had every test done and seen every doctor and in his opinion there was no immune illness and possibly no illness at all to be found. When I told him I had only had 26 tests runs over four years and most of them were my idea because just about every doctor acted like him and didn’t want to do the work he just snapped back that was because nothing is wrong with me. Of those 26 tests a third of them were routine urine tests, a third of them were routine blood tests 6 of them were ultrasounds on my abdomen and only five of them were special tests that I requested for different illness. I had NOT been tested well. The doctors in Alberta don’t do work unless it’s easy or it pays well. The report he sent out showed how bad of a doctor he is as his medical history for me was wrong on more than half of it. He had his medical student see me so that he could have a report that showed I was seen. In this report they make it seem like a thorough exam was done but this woman was very rough with me and quite condescending in telling me that I was clearly not ill. They claimed that based on the one blood test that had come up normal that year and the quick and dirty assessment that his student had performed there was no reason to look into an auto immune disorder. Well it’s been years now and I had to fight for myself thanks to this doctor and a few others claiming based on not running any tests themselves that I’m not ill. I fought hard to get genetic testing and I found out that I have a rare illness that’s actually very serious. If any of these doctors had thought to do testing years earlier I might not be as sick as I am now or at least we’d be working towards treatment. First off Dr. Penney you were extremely wrong about me and your very lazy and rude nature lead to years of pain and worsening illness. Secondly thanks to you and the other doctors I’m fighting for my long term disability even though I have proof I’m very ill. Thanks!
It’s very clear the doctor paid for it made the positive reviews on here. Does anyone police that?

Unprofessional and uneducated. He is more than happy to do a poor job while he pockets government money for the patients he sees

Right from the beginning I had a bad feeling about this guy... he ordered a bunch of unnecessary tests to further burden our healthcare system. Then at the end he just shrugged and said he doesn’t know what’s wrong with me!
