Biography

Maria Isabel Triana, M.D. is a Board-Certified, Comprehensive Ophthalmologist. She is originally from Bogota, Colombia, but relocated to the the U.S. in 2002. She completed medical school and residency training in Ophthalmology at Javeriana University, one of the oldest (1623) and most renowned private universities in South America. After residency, she worked in her own private practice and volunteered in remote areas of the the Amazon Rainforest where medical care was scarce. After relocating to the U.S., she worked as the Research Coordinator for a project investigating the development of diabetic retinopathy in children at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. She then relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where she completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Glaucoma Genetics at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary (Harvard Medical School) with Janie Wiggs, M.D., Ph.D. During this year, Dr. Triana identified a novel genetic defect associated with thin corneas (an independent risk factor for glaucoma) in an African-American population. Dr. Triana returned to San Antonio to repeat the Internship and Residency (4 years total) she had completed in Bogota, so that she could be licensed to practice in the U.S. She completed a rigorous Internship year in Internal Medicine followed by a 3-year Residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. Dr. Triana joined the San Antonio Eye Institute in 2011. Dr. Triana is a highly-skilled ophthalmologist who has been spotlighted in the renowned publication, The Leading Physicians of the World. She is a fluent English and Spanish speaker. Dr. Triana is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, and the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmologists. She was selected as a DOCTOR OF EXCELLENCE 2013 by the board of the Leaders in Healthcare Network and appears in the “Doctors of Excellence” edition of Physicians Review. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, dancing to salsa and merengue music, and playing sports (especially golf and tennis).
