My dad was very sick last summer. Our experience, on multiple occasions, with james paton memorial hospital in general, and the ER in particular, was truly disappointing. I was born in Gander and have now lived outside Canada for more than 2 dacades. While proud of my NL and Canadian heratage, it has become my opinion that the health system in NL really is a national disgrace, and would be for any other developed country. The people of NL need to recognise this, realize their power over elected officials, and demand better, for their own sake. I often think about moving back to NL but there's no way im growing old in a place with such an inadequate healthcare system, and others should think likewise.

My son had the misfortune of being examined by this so called doctor after being flown by helicopter to the emergency from his job site as a commercial diver. She blew him off with a less than adequate exam sending him home to heat a sore muscle but it was actually decompression sickness and now he is is spending weeks in the hyperbolic chamber and may never fully recover because of the delay in proper treatment. Bad bad doctor. Stay far away. Ask for another consult with anyone else

I've had her on a few occasions. Once was for a gallbladder stack and she asked what I expected her to do. This was at 2am and all she did was write a perscription to be filled the next day. Another time I called the health line and they advised me to seek medical attention within one hour because I had a bad cough causing shortness of breath. Dr. Johnson asked me if I knew the clinic had walkins and they could have handled it (I registered at the hospital 4 hours before walkins started).

Many people do go to the hospital with non urgent symptoms but there are times when we don't have a choice.

All doctors should be patient and kind when dealing with people. Being sick is physically and emotionally exhausting and a rude doctor who makes you feel horrible for seeking medical attention doesn't help.

Dr. Phyllis Johnson is a great emergency physician. She is a very busy physician in a very busy emergency room. She doesn't have a lot of patience for patients who waste her time. If you're truly sick and are in need of an emergency room you'll not find a better physician. If you're wasting her time and the er's space with simple things, like head colds and sore throats, that could be taken care of in your personal phycian's office...yeah...she's not going to be the most cordial. When you need a good physician who knows her stuff in an emergency situation...you'll not find many who are better. In the couple of times that I have seen her, in these types of situations, she been great! We should not waste the emergency department's time, space and staff with trivial things. That's not what it's for.
