Jane offered me complete informed choice and advocated for me to receive care based on the best evidence, even when that care was beyond the community standard. She was successful in this due to her excellent relationships with hospital staff. She offered me choice of birth place without coercion. In labour she was remarkably gentle, a great comfort and always obtained consent before an exam or heart check. I couldn't have had better care

Jane is good at gaining women's trust. She means well but in the end she is very attached to the rule book and has a lot of fear of the establishment and will follow procedures to the letter even if she has promised you to be hands off. Once the magic egg timer goes off to say your birth is taking "too long" you can expect to be poked, prodded, examined and recorded constantly. You will be pressured to do all sorts of things you never wanted to but since you are in labour and trust her you will cave in to your sorrow later. That was my experience. I felt quite betrayed and coerced and at a critical time in the labour extremely interferred with and disturbed when I most needed quiet and to be in an inner space of focus and flow. I believe this interference and constant questioning and being stared at and watched is what was responsible for a very long uncomfortable labour which ended up exactly where I did not want it to, in hospital. Next time I would ask more questions about what her promises really mean and when she considers all that she promised to be null and void. At what point does it all mean nothing and she is following her guidelines vs, your inner guidance? I think she has a good heart but not the guts to really stand for what she says she believes about birth and birthing women.

I must have had a different Jane (from the person described below), I wish my experience was positive and it's taken me lots of time to even start to recover from the emotional scaring.

Jane was there for the birth of our second child. Throughout the pregnancy, my husband and I had wavered with the idea of having a home birth or birthing in the hospital. We (I) made a game day decision to stay home rather than transferring to the hospital and it was one of the best decisions we, as a couple, have ever made. Jane made my birth mine. She trusted my body's capabilities more than I ever would have without her guidance and, by doing so, gave me the greatest gift - of empowerment. We are so thankful that Jane was there that day (although, all of the midwives who work with her would have been excellent as well). The prenatal and postpartum care was simply not comparable to that we received when we had our first baby with a doctor (and that was good care!). While trying not to sound too preachy, I can't help but try to point/steer/SHOVE my expecting friends and family in the direction of Jane and the rest of the South Delta Midwives. It was just such an overwhelmingly positive experience.

We had a very positive experience with the group of wonderful midwives at South Delta Midwifery. Jane, the most senior of the three, introduced us to the practice- after seeing the pleasant layout of the clinic and experiencing Jane's kind and gentle nature we chose to stay. We saw Jane for the first few appointments along with their midwife-in-training. We were given all of the time we needed to ask questions and check-in with the midwives, never feeling rushed. Jane stepped back to allow their trainee to lead our appointments (with our permission, which we granted). We quickly gained confidence in the ability and professionalism of both the midwife-in-training and of Jane's mentorship.

When I went into labor we were happy to find out that Jane was the midwife on call. My partner and I have a very strong connection and after doing our homework pre-natally, we were a solid team during the birthing process. Jane was able to pick up on this and took an observing role while my partner and I worked through contractions. She easily fit into the the atmosphere and energy that we had created in our birthing room (at home) and checked in on me and the baby at the appropriate times. Jane was able to spell my partner off on two occasions and with her calm presence helped me relax further and work through contractions. As labor evolved, Jane encouraged me to listen to my body and offered suggestions while supporting me on making my own choices. Once our baby was born, Jane and the supporting midwife professionally responded in a timely manner to our baby's need for two puffs of air with a mini bag-valve mask. She made sure to follow up with me once things had settled to explain the “intervention” that took place, and why it was necessary.

We sincerely appreciated the knowledge, consideration and compassion demonstrated by the collective of midwives at the South Delta practice. Throughout our prenatal, birthing and postnatal experience, we felt that we were in capable hands, that all three of the midwives were very much looking out for our best interests, and would do everything possible to comply with our birth plans (which did not include a trip to the hospital unless absolutely necessary).

I have the utmost respect for Jane Wines. I can truly say that she is amazing. She attended the birth of both my first and second daughter that we thankfully were able to have at our home. I knew that I wanted to birth my children at home and she gave me all the information I needed to feel comfortable and informed in my decision. She is professional, knowledgeable, experienced and I felt so confident being in her care. The other staff were also great but I did hope that she would be at both my births. Thankfully she was. I felt that she allowed me to birth my children the way that my body knew how and I'm not entirely confident that it would have been that way if I'd had someone else. Some things I believe are beyond our control and I'm fortunate that things went relatively smoothly for both of my births but if I'd had any complications I can honestly say that this is the woman I'd want to be there. She is always calm and humble in her nature but assertive when she needs to be. Thank you Jane.

During my prenatal care, I was lucky enough to have met and been cared for by three amazing midwives - Jane being one of them. I was secretly hoping the entire pregnancy Jane would be the one working when I went into labour as I immediately connected the most with her calm nature. I always felt that all my questions and concerns were always met and answered with the utmost professionalism. Lucky for me, Jane was the midwife who attended my home birth! Wahoo!

Being a first time mom, I knew things could take a while. With that being said, I never once felt rushed, pressure or forced into anything. She never once doubted my bodies ability to do what it needed to do. She was hands off but also at the same time, just *knew* when I just needed a hand to hold. It was an amazing experience and I owe a huge part of that to Jane. I will forever be grateful and look back at the empowering birth of my son with nothing but complete love and gratitude.

The midwives at Birch Tree are all very good at reminding you that your birth plan may not go exactly how you envision it and it's important to always go into birth with an open mind. I was VERY lucky that things went exactly how I wanted but had they not, I have no doubt that Jane would know what was best for me and my baby and only suggest interventions that she felt were completely necessary. I had nothing but the utmost trust in her.

All the thumbs up from me! :) ‎

Jane was present at the homebirth of my second child. I immediately connected with her when I met her for my prenatal appointments. She was always warm, friendly, and took time to get to know me in the process, asking more than just the 'necessary' questions. She clearly cares deeply. Any type of proceedure was carefully explained and I was always given a choice. I was relieved when I knew she would be attending my birth. Her hands off approach is so refreshing as she truly has such confidence in a woman's body and ability to birth her baby. I'm very grateful for the work she is doing and for all the midwives in her practice at South Delta Midwifery!

Clear from the turnover or Midwives in her clinic that there is an issue. She, at best, could be called a "med-wife" – yes she talks the talk and is great at pre and post care, however the birth experience I had was terrible. After agreeing to my birth plan and making me believe she would be on my side and support me fully, as soon as things weren't going by the book, she switched to pressuring me into doing things that I did not want and that she agreed that she would not perform… culminating in her saying to me that “the only way this baby is coming out is if we get the vacuum”. I can only believe that she justifies her actions with the thought that “if I throw this woman under the bus and do what the medical establishment wants me to do” (caesareans for anyone outside the textbook pregnancy) then I can do more for these other women… however is she really doing anything for anyone. If you aren’t just going to call her to weigh the baby once is born then you might as well have use one of the resident OBGYNs at Richmond, that’s who you will end up with anyhow… just ask her about her transfer rate.

After meeting with several midwives, I chose Jane Wines because she was knowledgeable and comfortable in a wide range of birth situations. She respected all my preferences and never talked down to me (like some other caregivers did). She was also quick and skilled at dealing with problems, while staying calm and pleasant. I had the birth experience I had always wanted thanks to her.
