After Dr. Schuricht repaired my hernia I suffered chronic pain. Along with complications related to the surgery, his bedside manner was concerning. He commented how awkward it was after I hugged my Dad before going into the operating room, he did not visit me in the recovery room after surgery, and he cursed frequently. I underwent a corrective surgery which revealed Dr. Schuricht's surgical technique was the source of my problems, along with possible permanent damage. I sent a formal letter of complaint to Penn Medicine and am satisfied with their response. However, I still recommend seeing a surgeon who specializes in hernias if you need one repaired.

Dr. Schuricht is #1 in my book. He has done three surgeries in a little more than a year. The first was a “routine” hernia repair, as well as the removal of an interthecal pump. It was supposed to be a simple two or three day procedure that turned into a twelve day ordeal. Upon removal of the pump, an infection migrated from the pump to the catheter that went into my spine. I ended up having emergency spinal surgery to stem the onslaught of infection that could have impacted me negatively for the rest of my life. Dr. Schuricht stuck with me the entire time; he took the lead, and kept me informed every single step of the way. His bedside manner is incredible; he makes the patient feel as though he is a long-time friend, who just happens to be a surgeon! He is not someone who rushes into surgery. My latest involvement with him was for the removal of an abdominal abscess which was lingering for months when it was brought to his attention. Although he could have performed surgery as the first step, he explored other options before doing so. Having had over twenty surgeries all over the eastern US in the past decade, I feel that I am qualified to fairly evaluate surgeons. Dr. Alan L. Schuricht is the best available in my opinion.

Dr. Schuricht performs bariatric surgery, which I did not have, and repairs hernias, which I did. He was hyper-confident that the repair would work (I was having trouble walking by the time I got to him, and couldn't run at all) -- and he was right. The Pa Hospital staff could not have been nicer or more careful & I was in by 6:30 am, out before noon. Dr. Schuricht encouraged me to run again within a few days, which I did -- I was running over a mile within a few weeks, and was really healed within 6 weeks or so. the man to see for this problem!
