Pompous idiot ----- obviously hates being an endocronologist and takes it out on his patients. I think their is an underlying inferiority complex operating along with his being a mean Mr. Know It All. In a way, he is to be pitied.

Flat out told me and my wife that after a complete thyroidectomy, “hypothyroidism does not affect metabolism “ and that walking to increase my physical activity was “useless.”

I’m the heaviest I have ever been even with staying on the high doses of levothyroxine and not eating breakfast or lunch each day.

He completely missed my diagnosis. I knew what he was going to say he thought the issue was as I sat and waited for him to come up with the misdiagnosis. A couple of years later and with things unresolved but a better understanding of the process at work (which I shared with my PCP, who agreed) I was referred back to his practice. He told my PCP he was not interested in seeing me. You have to me good at what you do. I agree with other comments posted here that he is pompous, dismissive, and uninterested.

Follow up to post on 9/19/2015 in regards to thyroid cancer. Post surgical pathology also revealed that the cancer spread to lymph nodes. This has made me feel even more strongly that in the hands of Dr. Oppenheim I would have been in danger.

While living in Maine, Dr. Daniel Oppenheim was my endocrinologist. I would see him for yearly ultrasounds and blood work in regard to my thyroid.
For many years my thyroid has had benign nodules that were always watched by my endocrinologist in the Mid-Atlantic. There is a family history of thyroid cancer.
While in Maine Dr. Oppenheim told me that I did not need to come to him anymore, that the nodules would never become anything malignant, and if by chance they did become something I could live with it. He was dismissive, unprofessional and uneducated.
I moved back to the Mid-Atlantic a few years ago. I had stopped going to an endocrinologist because of what Dr. Oppenheim said and suggested.
When some lymph nodes swelled in my neck some good doctors had the diligence to send me for an ultrasound of my neck and thyroid and to perform a biopsy if needed.
Turns out I have thyroid cancer. I have consulted with some of the top hospitals and institutions on the east coast, and all agree that this should not be left alone to live with, as Dr. Oppenheim would suggest.
I share this because no patient should ever have to feel like they don’t matter, and that their concerns are not valid. I feel Dr. Oppenheim did me a big disservice by putting me in harm’s way. No one has the right to make such a big generalization.
I feel grateful that my cancer was found and lucky to have been in good hands, capable hands and most important in caring hands who were willing to due diligence. Forever grateful to my Mid-Atlantic doctor.

I've been to Dr. O twice, about 10 years apart. The second time was at my primary care Dr.'s suggestion because my current medications of synthroid/cytomel weren't making me feel better and she wasn't sure what to do. I had forgotten seeing Dr. O ten years prior and agreed to go again. He was pompous and belittled me for looking information up on the internet. He cut my Synthroid in half and took me off Cytomel with a promise that he would put me back on it if I started feeling badly after 6 weeks if I would try staying off so he could get a "clean" TSH. I agreed even though 3 weeks in I felt horrible - no stamina, fuzzy thinking, and intense hot flashes that had been gone almost 2 years came back. I went back at the end of the 6 weeks and my TSH was perfect according to him but I felt horrible! I asked to be put back on the Cytomel and he refused. He likened to to feeling better on amphetamine! He sent me back to my primary care physician. Stay far away from this doctor.

Went for hypothyroid symptoms I'd had for years, but just placed on levothyroxine by my internist...wanted a second opinion on dosage. Oppenheim drew TSH, immediately lowered the dose by half for 6 weeks. Hypothyroid symptoms returned...had 2nd TSH drawn..called by nurse to state current TSH of 1.99 is normal. I asked about my symptoms and was told the doctor was releasing me back to my primary care unless I wanted to come back to him or see another endo. I said I would seek another opinion if Dr. Oppenheim was unwilling to treat by symptoms, as the higher dose had alleviated them. Nurse could not respond... I told her I was very displeased that I would be told I was well based upon the TSH result alone. All she could tell me was she was sorry I felt that way. I have had hypothyroid symptoms for decades and thought I would find a doctor who would listen and get to the root of my problem. Dr. Oppenheim is definitely not that doctor.

I have only great things to say about Dr.O. Have been seeing him for two years since an MRI for a neck problem also identified a tumor on my pituitary gland. The treatment he prescribed has worked very well. He has been very attentive to my questions and his staff has also been very helpful.. Another MD researched Endocrinoligists in the Portland area for me and said if it was him he would go see Dr. O, since his credentials seem to say he is the smartest of the bunch. No doubt he is. I let him do his thing and he figured out the best way to treat my situation without surgery and very little stress. He is all business and i like that. I wasn't looking for a friend or a therapist. I was looking for the best endocrinoligist in the area and I think got it.

Dr O has grown on me. Like many specialists he tends to be matter of fact and a bit...arrogant. But, the man listens if you take the time to talk. I mentioned the typing thing to him as it bothered me and he stopped right away without attitude and listened. I was borderline hypo on the "charts" at 4.2. I knew I was not ok because I was so sleepy and was gaining 5 lbs a month. He gave me synthroid and it helped some. When it didn't help me lose weight I asked for and received plain T3 in adjunct to it. That did the trick! I had more energy 3 days later than I'd had for years. I began a weight loss program again (ww) and have lost 45 lbs in 4 months. Last time I was there I thanked him for listening when no one else would and for working with me. Bottom line, I haven't yet met a specialist who isn't a bit above it all, I think it comes with the territory...but this one will do his best to help you get to feeling right.

I went to this doctor for a thyroid growth evaluation. I found him to be pompous and officious and like other posts here, dismissive of any knowledge I had and offended if I expressed opinions. My decision to dump him was when after he did an ultrasound (BTW, since he does them in his office, there's no films to take with you), he recommended a biopsy. He then said that he would not do the biopsy unless I also agreed to do the surgery. I don't like my healthcare hijacked or endure pompous nonsense in which my decisions are taken out of the process. Since I had this same problem ten years before, and when all said you MUST do surgery, I visited an alternative oncologist MD, who with counsel/diet/supplements, in one year, eliminated the tumor, and my condition was judged benign. This doctor acts like he's full of himself and no one else's opinion matters, even his patients'. I strongly suggest that anyone find another endocrinologist.
