While investigating something else, a large suspicious nodule was found in my thyroid. Dr. Cunningham ordered a thyroid sonogram and then a biopsy. Both came back as highly suspicious of thyroid cancer. Dr. Cunningham called me immediately. She was very calm which helped me be calm(er). She explained that she was recommending a particular surgery and why she thought that was the treatment of choice. I asked how often she had performed this surgery and she said that she averages one to two per week. When I asked questions about potential risks she told me what the procedures are that she uses to prevent those from occurring. She added that surgeons who do a lot of these surgeries know what to look for, which is important because everyone's anatomy is a little different. She answered all my questions patiently and knowledgeably and gave answers that matched with the research I had done. I never felt rushed. With every answer she communicated the breadth and depth of her experience and expertise with the procedure she was proposing. In case I wanted a second opinion, she gave me names of other surgeons whom she highly recommended. I felt very confident that I would be in excellent hands with Dr. Cunningham and did not opt for a second opinion. The surgery was successful and I am recovering well, right on the timeline she predicted. So yes, I found her surgery skills to be excellent!

Dr. Cunningham has a warm and friendly "bedside manner" that conveyed genuine concern for my experience and treatment. Throughout the process she was quick to call me directly with new test results and to get me in for office visits. She was respectful of me at all times. Her staff members were also always warm, professional, and quick to respond. I feel lucky that she was recommended to me by a friend and that I was able to have her do my surgery.
