My visit with Dr. Shimer was very positive. He explained what he saw using my MRI and was very professional. He listened and did NOT rush me. This was my first visit and will be seeing him again.

Dr Shimer became my Dr three years ago, he has always taken the time to explain what I need to have done. Had surgery last year in June, this was my 5 surgery (first by Dr Shimer). I was in so much pain I could not stand straight and walking was hard. Now I am walking four miles a day and light workout and no pain pills. This was major surgery, 14 screws ,2 rods, and 3 plates. Have done what he said and would highly recomend Dr Shimer

My daughter was referred to Dr. Shimer by a local Orthopedic doctor. I looked at some reviews before going - and they all seemed to be okay. We were the first appointment of the day - there was no wait for any length of time. First let me say the facility and the support staff, technicians, nurses, and resident doctor were outstanding. Second, Dr. Shimer - not so much. He seemed rushed, could have cared less that a 17 year old had significant back pain - and even checked his cell phone during our appointment! He seems a bit self absorbed - bothered that we were needing his attention. He commented on the fact that her MRI results were not from UVA because they were of less quality. My daughter took offense to the comment that she seemed "fine" and if she says she is in "pain" then he will believe her. She is a gymnast of 12 years - this wasn't an issue unless she wanted to further her career. When she explained it depended on the pain - he pretty much said well just live with it. He told her she has arthritis - and didn't want to use that word because it seemed "old". My daughter, felt like she was called a liar and she completed waster her time. In my personal opinion - Dr. Shimer is a spoiled doctor that is only interested in himself. However - the resident doctor was outstanding....she should receive his full salary!

I had two other back surgeries before meeting Dr. Shimer. Was referred by a friend. I knew going in that I needed surgery. It is very hard to find a very good surgeon and one with a good bedside manner as well. I found both in Dr. Shimer. He performed very extensive surgery which covered the three lower discs in my back. I did extremely well and am now able to walk without pain. Going on vacations are now a pleasure. I had one minor set back when I went home and CVS Pharmacy gave me the wrong pain medication. I am very sensitive to pain meds and UVA and Dr. Shimer were very careful with this. I only wish CVS had been as careful. Would highly recommend Dr. Shimer to every one. Very satisfied.

I've had 3 back surgeries from 1/3/11-1/15/13 and Dr. Shimmer performed them all. Always willing to answer any questions I had and never rushed as other doctors have. His staff has always been professional and nice and also answering any questions I have. I typically have issues getting quality care from doctors and assumed he be just like everyone else yet he wasn't. Most surgeons in my opinion want to find any reason to cut you but I never felt that way with him. He let me know when surgery would no longer help instead of doing it anyway just to get money from the insurance. I feel bad that others had a bad experience whereas I never did. In my opinion he is an excellent doctor with a great bedside manner.

I wish I had seen these other reviews before my appointment with Dr. Shimer. I felt like my appointment was with his assistant rather than him being that 95% was spent with the assistant. Dr. Shimer finally made it to the appointment and spent maybe 5 minutes talking to me. He barely looked at my MRI and scans, told me that I had arthritis, gave me a prescription for physical therapy and left. I couldn't believe it! I'm 66 and certainly arthritis played a factor in my severe back pain but there was no way that was the only problem. An excellent neurosurgeon was recommended to me and I wish I would have gone to him in the beginning. He was flabbergasted that a physician could look at my X-rays and come up with a "diagnosis" of just arthritis. The actual pain was caused by several major lower back problems and an operation was certainly in order. He also said that it was good that I didn't start physical therapy because it possibly would have done more harm than good. Dr. Shimer told me that an operation wouldn't help at all. Wrong! The operation was performed and I feel like a different person from lack of constant back pain. Overall, I agree that he didn't seem to care and almost seemed in rush to leave. It was not a good experience.

Dr. Shimer appeared extremely distracted during my appt. Unfortunately, I was his last patient of the day, on a Friday. He must have had a hot date because he did not even give me the time of day. He appeared annoyed with his staff. He did not examine me but relied on his assistant's notes. I have severe scoliosis w/curvatures +60 and I am in constant pain. He fudged his progress notes with speculative. He remarked that my pain level was "mild with no significant pain". I found him rude and uncaring. BEWARE!!!

I was seen by Adam Shimer due to a pinched nerve in my neck and a terrible pain in my right arm. Respect to the nature of my job which is typing with computer constantly, he gave me a note for staying out of work until my next visit. He specifically mentioned to me that my arm was so weak and he might consider a surgery in the future. However, he reported to my disability insurance that I was able to lift heavy things(untrue!) and I could go back to work. He has no idea about what he is doing. His staff were unprofessional as well. Stay away from him.
