My autistic son who is only five years old put a toy up his nose and it got stuck. We went to the normal emergency room where they could not get it out and they didn’t have the necessary team to handle a special needs child. We then took my son directly to Arnold Palmer, where once again they were unsuccessful at getting the toy out of my son’s nose. The doctor in the emergency room at Arnold Palmer repeatedly called Dr. Gotschall to come in because he was the on-call pediatric ENT doctor. This doctor refused to come in and see my son and stated it would be more convenient if he could see him at his own office the next day. My son was so uncomfortable for the next 24 hours and he was in extreme pain and spent the entire day crying. Being autistic he has a lot of sensory issues when it comes to his head and face. The next day we went straight to Dr. Gotschalls office, where we were told we would be responsible for our co-pay and that was it. We paid our co-pay to the office and went in to see the doctor just to be told that the toy was no longer in his nose and he must have swallowed it while he was sleeping. we were in the office for less than 20 minutes and now I am being billed for a surgery in which I owe the full cost of, when nothing was done to my son. When I called the office they let me know that you are charged the physicians visit just for walking in the door but to be seen by the doctor you will be charged for surgery as well. This is not standard practice and I believe it is insurance fraud. I will not be paying this bill and I will make sure that this office is held responsible for what they are doing to patients. If you are an on-call doctor you should go to the emergency room when you are called. You should not make the patient wait over 24 hours just to go into your office so you can make more money off of that poor child. This is unacceptable. I hope nobody ever sets foot in this office again.
