I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in July. Dr. Safa put me on Synthroid. After two weeks, I couldn't physically take my full dose, or I'd be in bed all day, dizzy, nauseous, high temperature.. When I called to ask his advice, he told me to cut my dose in half. I did, and have felt half as terrible, but I've had my period since August. Non-stop. He didn't seem phased at all and just told me to keep taking it. Now, he doesn't take my insurance anymore. I needed to have a mandatory procedure done the next week to check the size of my thyroid nodule. He refused to write an order for it, so that I could have it done elsewhere, and wouldn't send my lab results to my new doctor. I went through a huge mess trying to get another doctor to refer me for this important procedure, and all the while, getting phone calls every day from the front desk telling me that Dr. Safa would do the procedure for me, if I continued to come to him. The procedure is upwards of 1,500$ and they were suggesting I "pay at time of service". After expressing that it was the most important thing that I go somewhere that takes me insurance, they officially refused to do anything for me. I've recently been seen my another Endocrinologist in the area, who informed me that I do not even have to be on the medicine yet, because it's only required during pregnancy, or if I become Hypothyroid (which I wasn't yet, and this was news to me). Especially if the medicine was messing with my body, there was no real reason to take it. I have an autoimmune disease that cannot be reversed or fixed, and there was no need to pump extra hormones into me. I had read that Synthroid was pushed at doctors to prescribe, I just didn't think that a doctor would push it on someone with a disease that has no cure, and then be "alright" with the medicine making them absolutely miserable, on top of their other symptoms.

I diagnose with type 2 diabetes since 2009 and I have seeing Dr Safa for 5 years and he is one the top doctors in this this area or not the country. I have my business for more than 22 years and by reading some of the negative comments about the person who is helping you to have a better life and live longer than u expected is sad and shame. This is not Starbuck for god sake. You to Starbuck stay in line for along time and not a beep out of you and u even smile and say all kind of a compliments when you get your expensive late which is cost a nickel but you have a nerve to talk about your dr . You got to be a biggest dummy or just plane stupid. One more thing ,if you have problem why don't you talk to the DR instead of hiding like a p..........
And if you like to talk to me just leave me your number and I will meet you

I have type 2 diabetes and both my visits were excellent. Most of the work was done by NPs but my short time with the Doctor was also good. I have no complaints. The atmosphere was always cheerful and friendly and all my questions were answered in full. I would note that it is the patient's responsibility to ask questions.

I had questions about my not too good bloodwork results but the doctor didn't try to find out with my help (questions) why the results are like that. He just adjusted my medicine and ordered new bloodwork. Also, he was speaking very quietly so I had to ask him to repeat himself to know what he said, and he didn't say much to start with.

I was told I would get a needle aspiration for nodules both sides of neck. Never explained process before I made the appointment, arrived found out its six needles each side and no numbing for neck. To add to that fear you sign a form before the procedure that says all those takes may not even be enough or correct. I was so upset. You cannot just expect a person to lay there after they see the needles. You do a huge disservice to your patients when you don't take time to prepare them. I was so upset I did not want to hear an explanation, my heart was racing and I was unwilling to go forward. I will not go back to this doctor.

I have been under Dr. Safa's care for about 10 years and have had no problems with him. He has always been pleasant to me and seems very knowledgeable. The only problem I have had with him is that he has asked me to lose 15 lbs before I see him in 6 months. After attempting to lose the weight, I called to ask if I could get some help or advice on losing it, and was referred to another physician that does not accept insurance. As an endocrinolist, he should be able to help me himself.

I am very surprised to read some of these negative reviews concerning Dr. Safa. He was highly rated by the washingtonian magazine which tells you more than this site's ratings. I have seen him for over 6 years for hypothyroism and have found him to be a very good doctor. I don't understand why some people rate their doctor's personality rather than their ability as a doctor. His manner is business like, not overly friendly, but he is your doctor, not your friend. I am impressed by how the office manages the wait-time and sees patients very quickly. Very rarely is there a wait, and I appreciate that. My condition is properly managed- no issues whatsoever. Would recommend to a friend in a heartbeat.
