Dr. Aylward is the first doctor I've ever found who I truly feel comfortable with. She listens, she remembers, and she takes my concerns seriously. I appreciate that she takes all of the details of a situation into account and adapts her treatment plan accordingly really reflects how much she cares. I feel that she sees me as a whole person, and she understands that I would rather not be at the doctor's office- so I must really feel terrible! I appreciate that she thinks out loud, shares info about possible medicines, and knows when to refer. Her sense of humor and approachability put me at ease. I recently saw her for what i thought was the flu, and she immediately suspected a tick bite. And she was right! Many of my friends who have had tick-borne illnesses tell me that their doctors didn't initially test them, or brushed aside their suspicisons. If it hadn't been for Dr. Aylward, I would never have gotten the help I needed!

I've been seeing Dr. Aylward for 13 years. She's always impressed me with her intelligence and knowledge. She moves very quickly and this required and adjustment on my part, because this quickness felt like brusqueness. I discovered, however, that she seems to enjoy being asked questions and that is actually an excellent listener. Very bright and personable when engaged. In fact, I've found her to be exceptional in her willingness to discuss the pros and cons of different treatments etc. Open to the value of alternative healing modalities. Also, she's always been quick to refer me to specialists and/or tests. At the end of the day, I feel I've got a doctor who is bright, caring, and very open to engaging with me.

Dr.A has always been friendly but professional. She always refers me to specialists when needed & she was very encouraging when I faced a serious surgery. She was truely sympathetic to my problem & equally happy at the successful outcome. She is pro-active concerning my health & I really appreciate her involvement. Very good doctor.

Dr. Aylward left a message on my answering machine on a Saturday afternoon that I had an abnormal pap smear. She stated that she would be back in her office the following Tuesday. It took me until the following Thursday to get the results of the pap smear. I find this to be unprofessional and uncaring. I then had an ultrasound, a DNC and a hysterectomy without any follow up from my "primary care physician." On the day I found out that I had endometrial cancer, she had her nurse call me to schedule an appointment. Needless to say, I have not been back to Dr. Aylward. Prior to this incident, I visited Dr. Aylward for what I believed to be a urinary tract infection and severe back pain. I had to insist that she refer me to an orthopaedic physician and do urine screen. I really don't think she listens to her patients and even worse, I don't think she cares.

I have had similar experience with her. She can be brusque sometimes. I have to tell her the same thing 3 or 4 times; I don't think she really listens.

Gillian Aylward, Timberlyne Family Medical Center (Duke), Chapel Hill, N.C. 919-942-8500. Worst doctor! Arrogant and egotistical. I explained my health problem. She didn't listen or care. The walls are so thin that I heard her speaking to one of the nurses saying, "All these Americans are hypochondriacs." When she came back into the examination room, she said to me, "Are you afraid of getting cancer?" She ignored the lump in my nose, the lump in my neck, and my overall feeling of illness. No diagnosis and no treatment. I went to another doctor who diagnosed my disease and I am now being treated. She missed it because of contempt for Americans. I asked her receptionist what nationality she is and she said that Dr. Aylward is Canadian. I thought a female doctor would be more compassionate, but not her. I wasted my time and money going to her. If she hates Americans so much, why doesn't she go back to Canada. But I guess she can't make a lot of money there like in the US.

I'm always comforted by my visits to Dr. A. She feels like a friend, while maintaining her authority/distance as a doctor. I always feel like she listens carefully and takes what I say seriously. What I admire the most is that I feel like she trusts my judgement yet wouldn't hesitate to question it if she had any concerns.

Dr. Aylward was the only real doctor I have ever had. She always 'treated' me like I was part of her family. Always made me feel like I was her only patient. Could not ask for more - except to come back to Nova Scotia.. We miss you here.

Biography

People are often curious as to why one chooses medicine as a career. For me, it was a strong desire to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle and to fight the challenges of chronic illness. Of course, applied physiology in medicine has always fascinated me. The scope of illness and multigenerational nature of family medicine is very satisfying. I embrace all disciplines and patient ages that family medicine encompasses. In particular, geriatrics is challenging as it is multidisciplinary in management. Adolescent medicine is important as it lays the cornerstone for lifelong healthy habits. I truly enjoy all aspects of family medicine, and that is why I chose it for a career. My philosophy of practice is prevention of disease with a focus on personalized care. The numerous resources available in today's medical environment empowers a family doctor in ways that have never previously been possible. I am married with three adult children and one beagle. My outside interests include golf, swimming, gardening, paddle boarding and trail walking. I also volunteer in the PORCH program (a food service for the underprivileged).
