I was a patient of Dr. Tanen starting in 2015-2016 based off a referral from another doctor. During the time of treatment, he was helpful and professional. When my insurance changed, I decided that for cost reasons, it would be easier to handle my treatment through my primary care which was fine given that my condition was easily monitored. When that recently changed, I was instructed to see a specialist and was once again recommended to go to Dr. Tanen. Since it had been a while, I was registered as a new patient, sent the forms to fill out, and within a few minutes given a call saying they won't take my case. I decided to call them back to get more information and was told they aren't accepting new patients at this time. Completely understandable given that we are in a pandemic and it can be difficult to add new patients given the case load doctors already have. I was then told that he would first be available to see people in December. So I asked if I should call back then to see if he is taking on the new patients to which I was told no. When asked why I was told that because he said no to my case this time that he would never take my case or me on as a patient in the future. After hanging up I was still a little confused so I decided to call back and ask more questions, the main one being if you're saying that the reason he won't take my case is because he's not accepting new patients but that once he starts seeing new patients again he still won't take the case, clearly there is another factor. Also, if you're not accepting new patients at the time, why would you not say that in the initial phone call? Why have patients go through the trouble of creating a profile, filling in their medical history, and providing insurance card information and medical records? The last woman I spoke to was tipping the scale of no longer being polite but still professional and again was unhelpful and only kept repeating that they were taking no new patients and that he would never take my case so go elsewhere. When asked if I could get any more information about why I was not being considered as a potential new patient, she said she could not and that no was the only answer I would get and not taking new patients was the only reason he wouldn't see me now and in the future.
I want to make it clear that I know that all doctors cannot accept every patient who comes their way and that it is not a personal thing if they decide to take your case or not. However, it is unprofessional to have people give you all their medical records and information and then arbitrarily not provide care based on the information provided under the guise of "we aren't accepting new patients at this time" (particularly since when asked if once he starts taking new patients I should call back and was told no he will never take my case).
So I am adding a star for his care since he was helpful when I saw him 4 years ago but lowering it because of the operations of the practice and lack of explanation, answers, and assistance on the part of the office team. I welcome any more information the office can provide and have that discussion but standing now, I would suggest finding a different practice who puts their patients care and concerns first.

I joined as a patient 6 years ago when I was pregnant. For the first three to fours years. I would have to call 5 to 6 times to make an appointment. Every time I called I was put on hold for at least 20 minutes and usually more which would cause me to have to hang up and try again. Every time having the same issues. The last two years, they have been better about picking up the phone but then the office staff is usually rude and not experienced. The only reason I stayed was because I liked Dr. Tanen. Recently I received a call stating that I owed $25 for my co pay. At the time I was driving to appointments with my kids and didn’t have my health card so I asked if I could pay at my next appointment which was something I’ve always done. She stated that it was fine and that she would note my account. A few weeks letter I received a letter from Dr. Tanen stating that he was no longer going to be my doctor and provide me any medical care because I had an outstanding balance of $25. When I called to ask about this shocking and abrupt letter. The office manager said it was a mistake and that the previous person never noted my account. When I came to make an appointment a few weeks after that they told me that the doctor no longer wants to provide service to me. When I asked to have the doctor call me back he never did and did not fill my prescription that I needed daily for my thyroid. Also this was not the first time I requested a call from the doctor which was never returned. I guess I was wrong about the doctor as well.

I am patient if doctor Tanen since November 2017. I switch to him after my endo retired. He is very informative and open to discusses my concerns and possibility of different treatment. As thyroid cancer patient this is important for me to know if he will be willing to try different treatment options. When I call with question the office staff was very fast and helpful with responses. I hope the negative reviews are rare and will not prevent new patients to give him a chance. As for me he is a good detail oriented physician.

I found Dr. Tanen after having an awful experience with a Woodbridge doctor. Dr. Tanen got my thyroid stabilized in a matter of weeks. My visits with him are routine now, and that is such a blessing. I always get a phone call from Dr. Tanen personally to tell me the results of my blood work. Prior to the physical exam, he always takes the time to review how my last six months have been, any life changes. I cannot say enough good things about him.

The majority of Dr. Tanen's good reviews are years old.
His office staff is horrible. They are rude, uncaring and flat out lie. I have a voicemail from a member of his staff telling me one thing and when I called to question her, she denied that she ever said what she did on the recording. Liar.
Dr. Tanen goes thru the motions and processes you thru like you are a part on an assembly line. He never, in my 4 years of going to him, explained what was happening in my body and what the meds he prescribed for me actually did unless I questioned him about it - and then I was treated like a subservient.
I never saw the same nurse twice in his practice. That probably speaks to the way the staff is treated or paid. EVERY TIME that I had blood drawn I'd end up with massive bruising due to the incompetence of the technician. This never happens anywhere else with me.
I've heard his other two partners Cranz and Rubenstein be verbally abusive to staff on more than 1 occasion.
This practice is consistently voted by Washingtonian Magazine as being some of the top Endocrinologists in the DC area. Realize that the vote come from fellow doctors and not the patients being treated.
Yes, I'm critical of poor, uncaring, incompetent and rude service. That is exactly what you will eventually experience in the offices of Dr. Shlomo Mark Tanen.
Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.
