I was a patient of Dr. Tanen starting in 2015-2016 based off a referral from another doctor. During the time of treatment, he was helpful and professional. When my insurance changed, I decided that for cost reasons, it would be easier to handle my treatment through my primary care which was fine given that my condition was easily monitored. When that recently changed, I was instructed to see a specialist and was once again recommended to go to Dr. Tanen. Since it had been a while, I was registered as a new patient, sent the forms to fill out, and within a few minutes given a call saying they won't take my case. I decided to call them back to get more information and was told they aren't accepting new patients at this time. Completely understandable given that we are in a pandemic and it can be difficult to add new patients given the case load doctors already have. I was then told that he would first be available to see people in December. So I asked if I should call back then to see if he is taking on the new patients to which I was told no. When asked why I was told that because he said no to my case this time that he would never take my case or me on as a patient in the future. After hanging up I was still a little confused so I decided to call back and ask more questions, the main one being if you're saying that the reason he won't take my case is because he's not accepting new patients but that once he starts seeing new patients again he still won't take the case, clearly there is another factor. Also, if you're not accepting new patients at the time, why would you not say that in the initial phone call? Why have patients go through the trouble of creating a profile, filling in their medical history, and providing insurance card information and medical records? The last woman I spoke to was tipping the scale of no longer being polite but still professional and again was unhelpful and only kept repeating that they were taking no new patients and that he would never take my case so go elsewhere. When asked if I could get any more information about why I was not being considered as a potential new patient, she said she could not and that no was the only answer I would get and not taking new patients was the only reason he wouldn't see me now and in the future.
I want to make it clear that I know that all doctors cannot accept every patient who comes their way and that it is not a personal thing if they decide to take your case or not. However, it is unprofessional to have people give you all their medical records and information and then arbitrarily not provide care based on the information provided under the guise of "we aren't accepting new patients at this time" (particularly since when asked if once he starts taking new patients I should call back and was told no he will never take my case).
So I am adding a star for his care since he was helpful when I saw him 4 years ago but lowering it because of the operations of the practice and lack of explanation, answers, and assistance on the part of the office team. I welcome any more information the office can provide and have that discussion but standing now, I would suggest finding a different practice who puts their patients care and concerns first.
