Biography
Dr. Bell is a fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic/oral and maxillofacial surgeon whose clinical practice, teaching and research is devoted entirely to head and neck cancer, trauma and corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery. He holds a dental degree from Creighton University, a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed his surgical training. Dr. Bell is currently Co-Director of the Providence Head and Neck Cancer Program and Clinic at the Providence Cancer Institute, where he also directs a Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery; a Member of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at the Robert W. Franz Cancer Center; Attending Trauma Surgeon at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center; and Clinical Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. He has served in leadership positions with numerous professional societies, boards, foundations and committees and is Past President of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons and the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Bell has pioneered the use of virtual surgical planning in head and neck surgery, trauma and orthognathic surgery and was one of the first surgeons on the U.S. west coast to perform transoral robotic surgery for oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer. Dr. Bell has fostered an institutional commitment to head and neck cancer immunotherapy research through numerous collaborations with scientists at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute. His research efforts are directed toward application of novel findings to the clinic, enhancing tissue collection for scientific interrogation, and the design of novel therapeutic trials in head and neck cancer. His work has resulted in over 150 scientific articles and book chapters, and he is co-editor of two major textbooks, including Oral, Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery; and Current Therapy in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
