i have been seeing Dr McConnell since 1996 when I had an injury from TKD. He has done two hip replacements and two knee replacements on me. He has always supplied good information as well.

Dr. McConnell is very self-absorbed. This leads him to think that he is a better surgeon than he is. I went to him around seven years ago to have a right knee replaced. The has turned out to be the worst mistake of my life. He does not advertise himself as a knee surgeon. He ruined my life. I now have peripheral neuropathy because of his clumsy skill. I am in great pain in my feet every night. P>N> is progressive. It noe affects both my legs and arms I lose my balance without an aide. I can no longer button my shirts because the P.N. has numbed my fingers. My advice. If you want real orthopedic help go to The Anderson Clinic.

. McConnell is an awful surgeon. Thanks to him I now have crippling peripheral neuropathy. I can hardly walk now. I have tremendous pain in my feet, my legs, my knees. It has been progressive to the point that my fingers are so number I cannot even button a shirt This has been going on for years now and has comp;eatery ruined my life. When he operated he knew full well that he did not have the skill to perform a knee operation, but he went ahead and did it. I was in a nursing home for three weeks, and then had three weeks of PT at home. One of the worst parts of PN is the loss of balance. His ineptness has ruined my life'

I suspect that Dr. McConnell is probably competent as a medical practitioner, but as a patient I found him gruff and disappointing. I waited for over half an hour to see him, only to have two to three minutes of actual interaction — during which he continued to interrupt me while I was explaining my symptoms. His staff are pleasant, but I recommend seeing a different doctor if at all possible.

John McConnell is the most arrogant, rude, impatient, unhelpful doctor I have ever met. In March 2011, I had arthroscopic knee surgery on my left knee by him; then in June he performed the same procedure on my other knee. His "bedside" manner is awful. He always interrupted me and cut me off when I tried to succinctly describe my problem. Anything beyond 5 seconds is evidently too much for him. Post-surgery questions and problems are curtly dismissed by him. The last time I saw him I had tears in my eyes when I left. The receptionist asked me if anything was wrong, and I told her (in a civilized way) what I thought of Dr. McConnell. I got choked up and just left. She followed me out of the office as I darted for the elevator. She kept apologizing for him and wanted to comfort me---for his arrogance, his impatience, his curt manner. I was in pain and simply wanted his advice and maybe some help. His arrogance and dismissive attitude are shocking and unethical, in my opinion.

Nine months after hip replacement surgery, I still have no feeling in the shin area of the leg (nerve damage) and IT band pain which sometimes makes it so painful to walk, that I can't! Immediately after surgery, there was a 1/2" leg length difference (which Dr. McConnell blew off as "it is only about 1/4," you'll get used to it). After the 2nd post-op appointment, where he was so arrogant about my questions, I got a 2nd opinion. The new surgeon verified the 1/2" leg difference and made other suggestions. When I asked Dr. McConnell about anti-biotics prior to dental work, he said I didn't need a prescription, when, in fact, it is an ADA requirement. My dentist will not do anything unless a hip replacement patient is pre-medicated. This whole experience has been so disappointing. I feel like I had "cowboy" surgery and spent 6 months in PT trying to get over it and still am not.

Treatment with Dr. McConnell has been excellent. The Arlington office is nice, no long waits to see Dr. McConnell and he is always willing to answer my ton of questions. I have had an excellent experience with him as an orthopaedic doctor and surgeon on 2 different surgeries. I would recommend him to family and friends in a moment.

I was very unsatisfied. After 40 minutes of waiting to see Dr.McConnell, I finally got to talk to him. He spoke to me for 3 minutes max, sent a nurse to give me an X-ray. I waited another 15 minutes for my diagnosis at which time he came into the room, just told me what I had (yes, it wasn’t anything critical but I was still concerned and would have appreciated some advice), gave me a handout which he didn’t even fill out (there were spaces to fill out how many times to do certain exercises, for how long, etc.) and spent a total of 2 mins going over my X-ray and the handoout and then just left. As he was walking out the door I asked him for recommendations and more input and he said he really didn’t have anything else to add. Was he unpleasant or rude? No, not at all. Just not a great doctor. After an hour of waiting and paying however many dollars for the appointment and X ray, I would have appreciated more than 2 minutes of his time. I wouldn't recommend him.

Not only did he incorrectly treat my injury, he was an utter jerk when it came to "bedside" manner.

Unscrupulous billing practices. If they say that you have an amount due pre-surgery, and it should cover the services in full, DO NOT believe them. We've gotten 700 dollars in additional bills above and beyond the billed amount. It's not because of the insurance not covering things they;re expected to cover, either. It's just that they didn't include the appropriate amounts up front. Unethical, in my opinion. I also felt rushed into surgery and like he made overly optimistic predictions about how quick I'd be back to doing things, but after the surgery he claimed he'd never said anything like that. I feel like it's a little bit of a bait and switch with this doctor.
