today I noted a change in him . Not as nice as he used to be and was quite hurried and slightly dismissive. Did my full hip replacement 3 years ago and now i need cortisone injection or PRP or physio therapy it's not that I would not have needed it with another surgeon ...it is the way he talked to me. Well it looks like you have no problem walking he said. Yes ...but the problem is I have constant pain, these things can be a nuisance he said I don't know I prefer someone with more compassion. IF you want understanding and compassion he is not the one for you.

My husband injured his arm and was referred to Doctor Smit. Our family doctor had said that my husband will require surgical help. He wanted over $13k for the surgery to be done right away but we can't afford that kind of money. So when we asked him about MSP coverage, he basically rushed us out and said the hospital will call. It's been a week and nothing. I think he is in the business of making money, not helping. But ultimately, it is the patients that suffer. Although, after reading all the reviews I am almost glad he didn't do the surgery.

Stay away people this man ruined my life !! Left me in a cast for 11 weeks and then wouldn’t see me I kept calling to ask to see him in person because my foot was turning purple I now have CRPS the most painful disease known to mankind !! I had to diagnose myself and when i finally got a hold of him I told him what I thought I had and he hung up on me and dropped me as a patient then lied to the secretary that I verbally abused him on the phone and now I’m dying all because he wouldn’t take 10 min out of his time too see me when I fist noticed something wasn’t right, I’ve been passed from dr to dr for 18 months now and they are telling me it’s either back to opiates that almost killed me but did absolutely nothing for nerve pain or assisted suicide!!! Thanks so much Dr Smit my life is over at 41 , the most arrogant Dr I’ve ever met and spoke to only saw him once and didn’t even take the time to look at my foot ! He has to be stopped I’ve read too many of these reviews he’s killing people and having people amputate their limbs for his incompetence!!! Shame on you ! Your an evil person !! STAY FAR AWAY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

Do not see this doctor!!

I went to see Dr Smit due to an ankle injury. I was given his contact information from the Peace Arch ER. My first appt with Dr Smit lasted 2 minutes and he didn’t examine my ankle or leg. He relied only on the CT scan from the hospital. Because of his laziness and ineptitude the ruptured Achilles tendon was misdiagnosed for 2 months. I knew there was something wrong with my ankle so I paid for a private MRI. Upon seeing Dr Smit after he received the MRI report he again tried to hustle me out of his office. Instead of leaving I asked him what the MRI report said. Turns out he hadn’t read the report. He read it and came back in where he advised me I could either have a limp for the rest of my life or have surgery to repair the Achilles Tendon. He said that I needed the surgery right away and that he had a spot available at his private clinic where I would have to pay for it. Thank God that I was called the next day advising me that Dr Smit had passed my case along to a colleague in another practice for a second opinion. I had a successful surgery the following week with another doctor.

I repeat…. Do not use Dr Smit.

Never will I go to him again , for any kind of surgery. I had suffered for over a year with a double meniscus tear. My doctor referred him to me which was strange as I had surgery two years earlier with a different surgeon and have had no problems with my knee since, but trusted my docto. A few months later I got in to see Smit. He seemed nice enough, but as the appointment ended, he said he had a three year line up for surgery. I was destroyed and not thinking right as I should have went back to my original surgeon at this point . I went home and told my husband, I was literally in tears. My leg was swollen and in extreme pain . I being a very active person was starting to feel depression setting in. To my surprise my husband, being extremely concerned ,phoned the clinic and his staff said that I could get the surgery faster if I did it private with him so the arrangements were made and I was in the next week.
I was shocked . If I pay him up front he can operate now, I know why there’s a three year wait. People are in pain and get it done privately. Knowing the pain I was in , if he was the least bit concerned he might have suggested I check out another surgeon.
So I did the private surgery. The experience with the staff was fantastic. Smit did the surgery and I wish I could say things went splendid but I can’t within weeks I was back in pain. I went to physiotherapy trying to recover and it was suggested to me by other professionals that the incision was too close to the nerve and scar tissue had grown onto the nerve. I was literally getting electric shocks up and down my leg. I made an appointment and was never able to see Smit only his assistant and all he wanted to do was give me a cortisone shot in which I personally would have to pay for and make me go away with no response to my concern in fact, denial.
All said I went back to the surgeon that had done my first knee and he confirmed that I had scar tissue on the nerve. He helped me out best he could and I got some relief back.
Another issue I had is that everyone has a different pain threshold and doctor Smit gave me a prescription for very strong painkillers. I was so out of it that I felt sick for the two days I took them. I told my husband I didn’t even know how much pain I was in so I stopped taking them and found a simple Tylenol was enough, what a waste of money which I think Smit is all about. Sorry but six years later I am still struggling and in pain with my knee.

This is by far the most arrogant and rude doctor I have ever encountered. Do not waste your time.

Dr Smit is an excellent orthopedic surgeon. He did arthroscopic surgery on both my knees simultaneously some 6 years ago and I’m still dancing. I’ve been pain free since the surgery and have full mobility. My surgery was done on a timely basis notwithstanding the reduction in operating theatre time at the Peace Arch Hospital. I followed his post recovery recommendations and have had no recurring issues.
