As a sports medicine physician, he amazingly knowledgeable. I am delighted to report his knowledge of the spine and the surgical procedures I needed really put my mind at ease. He has been 100% correct for the past 8 years keeping my back healthy, flexible, and pain free with epidurals regularly . The time has now come for surgery as my back is deginerating with age-related stenosis and arthritus to the point that it is the only option now. He is fantastic!

... He did not perform a physical examination (I see other posts here regarding this matter). A staff member seemingly inadvertently included a copy of my "progress report" in some papers she handed me. Included was a quite detailed report of a physical examination -- reflexes were graded, various classic signs were noted to be negative, ROM was noted normal -- it happened to be markedly limited. There are a couple other subtle but real deficits he missed in not doing a physical exam. The entire physical exam on paper was fabricated! I think this is a matter of integrity in medicine. I wanted to like him. He is nice. While an MRI was ordered, I do not believe the more useful diagnostic tests for my problem (one of which is a single plain x-ray at a particular angle) were ordered. For what ever reason, I was not able to have an intelligent discussion about my problem with this doctor. http://www.vitals.com/doctor/profile/1588646368/reviews/1588646368#ixzz1bDLU6PwT

I was referred to Dr. Ashford in 2006 by multiple people so I thought that was a good sign, and he did a good job with first trying to avoid surgery, and then finally having to do it. After 6 earlier months of other therapy in 2005, my lower back disk bulges had pinched my nerve cord to badly that my left foot was numb and had lightning pain shoot down left leg. We tried epidural first and when it did not help in 2 days he was able to get me into surgery without much wait. He explained very well the long term damage and what I would have to do to rehab the muscles and nerve root. I did my rehab stringently and now for the past 3 years I'd say I'm virtually 100% recovered. The surgery was a "simple" microdiscectomy and he took out a potion of the bulged disk, but even though it was not major, back surgery id tricky and I'm very grateful for Dr. Ashfords time and care. He was attentive in my office visits as well.

Dr, Ashford helped both my mother and mother in law. What a wonderful man, gentle, kind caring, and knowledgeable-never pushy. Up front with procedures and what to expect for recovery. Both had kyproplasty surgery done. He sat with both of them and took as much time as needed. His office girl is short and does not listen always.. appointment can take a long time but I found when it was our turn Dr Ashford took him time with us. I highly recommend him. First time with Mom (86 yrs old) took 2.5 months because of insurance recovery took 6 month, 2nd time 3 weeks and 2 week of recovery for compression fracture in spine due to osteoporosis.

I have found Dr Roy Ashford to have great knowledge in his field and shows compassion and genuine caring for his patients. He has been my surgeon since taking on my case, having done a "salvage job" to repair damage left by my previous spine specialist as well as continuing care of my on-going problems. I would never consider seeing anyone else and always refer anyone who may need his services.

I agree with the previous two reviews. I saw Dr. Roy Ashford for my back pain after I fell on my back slipping at work. He took xrays of my back and didn't explain much to me. He seemed full of hot air and didn't listen to me. I can understand not understanding my problem but he could help me by sending me to some other doctor such as pain management to help me or explain what he thinks is my problem. I could tell he didn't care about me and just cared about moving on to the next patient. He didn't give me any pain medication but just told me to go to physical therapy. I would avoid Dr. Roy Ashford if you want a doctor who is helpful.

concur with previous reviewer, dr roy ashford is unknowledgeable, and unknowledgeable about particular and obvious conditions that he should be most knowledgeable about. dr roy ashford missed a diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid leak and prescribed the worst possible thing for me, physical therapy, which made my condition even worse. all my symptoms cried c.s.f. leak, but even though spinal surgeons of all surgeons are the ones most responsible for causing c.s.f. leaks (because of the proximity of their surgery to the spinal cord), he did not diagnose me despite the obviousness of it. he had no sympathy for my chronic, 24 hours a day pain (i was considering ending it all because of it) and said that farmers loose their arms and keep on farming so i should live with it! dr roy ashford would not prescribe any medication for pain. dr roy ashford did not refer me to a pain management doctor. dr roy ashford did not care about me beyond ordering expensive in-house x-rays.

Dr. Ashford was not very knowledgeable about my symptoms - my hands and legs where not working and I had extreme pain in my back and legs. He felt that it was possible that a disc was bulging in my spine but I had stenosis.
