Dr. Tewari cannot be trusted.
Just because you are going to Dr. Tewari for Robotic prostate surgery does not mean you may get the expertise of world most experienced robotic surgeon for prostate surgery. Dr. Ash Tewari knows nerve sparing technique; he invented it. He would know if the nerve was cut and sphincter was damaged during the surgery. I developed permanent incontinence after Robotic prostate surgery for prostate cancer “supposedly” performed by Dr. Tewari. During follow up visits I kept telling him how bad the incontinence I have and he kept reassuring me that it will be all OK after 6 months. Then he said it will get better after 12 months, then after 18 months but that never happened. As a surgeon who does nerve sparing prostate surgery he would have known what happened to my sphincter and/or nerve but never told me the truth that they were damaged and kept giving me false hope of recovery. During one visit, I asked Dr. Tewari “why did you let Dr. Reddy do the surgery when you told me that you yourself do the entire Robotic part yourself?” He said “how do you know Dr. Reddy did the surgery?” instead of giving me a straight answer and clearly telling me that he did not.
If Dr. Tewari did the entire Robotic procedure himself as promised, I would not have developed severe/permanent incontinence. Small percentage of patients who develop severe/persistent incontinence may be the ones who Dr. Tewari allows some other doctors to do the procedure. Once the patients are under anesthesia, they would not know who actually did the procedure unless you happen to know someone in the operating room. It is a shame that a world respected surgeon allows other doctors to do the surgery DESPITE a prior agreement that he himself will do the main Robotic part of the operation. I would never trust him again nor would recommend anyone to him for any surgery not because he is a bad surgeon but because HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED.
Very frustrated in New York
