I'm a physician who works in the pharmaceutical industry. I have been seeing Dr. Lettenberger for 16 years and I can confirm much of what others note below. Jim is a truly exceptional physician who cares deeply about what he does and wants to make a difference in the lives of his patients. Jim has a remarkable, and consistent, recall of detail which, to me, has confirmed over and over again that he is really listening. As others note, he has a talent for asking one or two judicious but provocative questions that open the door to very powerful lines of inquiry. He really understands the soul-siphoning work environments that many of us find ourselves in, but he doesn't resort to trite and trivial "People Magazine"-type solutions. If you see Dr. Lettenberger expecting that he is going to give you "answers", however, you're going to be very disappointed- that's not his role or function. He is very knowledgeable about medications and I sincerely appreciate that he is open to trying different approaches-- he doesn't hassle you or raise an eyebrow if you express a desire to try something. Of course, as is the case with any physician, you have to build trust. This goes without saying, but Dr. Lettenberger is a human and he's going to occasionally have an "off" day-- but based on all my years working with him, that is an extreme rarity and easily overlooked in the context of the enormous help and support he regularly and consistently provides.

De Lettenberger is absolutely the very best in all matters. He is very very knowledgeable, he is very very attentive , he remembers everything that we talked about even from 12 years back. He has the very best in bed side manners and empathy. He has put me on the right track numerous times and I can’t even put in words what he has done for me.
He is the very very BEST. A rating of 20 is what I would give him.

He is often out of the office and either doesn’t check his messages or he takes his time to reply. And he doesn’t use email.

I was not impressed. He came highly recommended, so maybe my expectations were too high. I expected greater compassion and knowledge from a mental health care provider.

The best psychiatrist I have seen, and I have seen five other psychiatrists in the DC area. Now Dr. Lettenberger has been my doctor for over 8 years. He really listens, and he has a subtle way of asking questions that gets at the heart of the matter. He also really knows his meds. He respects my point of view; I feel like we are partners.

Having worked with numerous psychiatrists in connection with my PTSD and longstanding depression and anxiety issues, I can say without a doubt that Dr. Lettenberger has been the best. He has helped me find a medication regimen that works and really cares about understanding why you are seeking medication. So many psychiatrists will see you for 15-20 minutes and then hand out a script, but Dr. Lettenberger thinks it is important to have a longer visit so that you can really talk holistically about what is going on. In addition, as a lawyer at a big DC law firm, I really appreciate that Dr. Lettenberger has treated many people in similar situations and doesn't default to advising that I would probably feel better if I just worked less or took a different job. That's not to say that he doesn't provide good advice on work-life balance, just that he isn't judgmental and understands how to counsel people who are struggling with issues but also thrive in a fast-pace, high pressure job. His sense of humor is fantastic, and I look forward to every appointment with him.

Dr. Lettenberger was fantastic from the start. During the hardest time of my life, he helped me get back on track. He is very knowledgable and has a good sense of humor to balance things out. I highly recommend him!

Dr. Lettenberger prescribed me a medication without explaining its side effects, which turned out to be terrible. They resulted in long-term damage to my career, psyche, and relationships. When I phoned him for help, he did not provide useful assistance. I cannot caution strongly enough against seeing him, or at least getting a second opinion.

I've recommended Dr. Lettenberger to several folks. He was very helpful to me in a very tough part of my life in a way prior therapists had not. I came out much happier, stronger and a better understanding of what was ailing me.
