I first met Dr. Janzen in the summer of 2016. He was nicely mannered, well groomed and very likeable. He was firm but fair. I have been battling bipolar disorder since age 25. I had given up on life and Dr. J was my life line. He gave me the attention and care that no other family member or friend had over the years...he saved my life! I owe him my life...I am a better person and a healthier woman because of him...thank you Dr. J for being there for me...God bless...your grateful patient. 😊

Dr. Janzen is not a psychiatrist, rather he is a GP with a “speciality in Psychiatry”. This is something that a lot of patients are misinformed about. But it is important.

I had Dr. Janzen while I was on the Mood Disorders inpatient unit at Parkwood this past summer and I strongly disliked him. I found him abrupt and not at all compassionate or empathetic. He didn’t take my suicidal ideation and attempts seriously. But he often did talk about his professional liability.

I have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and he wanted to put me on Wellbutrin, which is an antidepressant. Earlier in the summer while at LHSC, I was put on Prozac and experienced significant mood lability as a result, but was taken off of it.

While I was at LHSC, the plan for me was for me to receive ECT — a treatment that provided me with hope. However that plan was scrapped the minute I was Dr. Janzen’s patient.

He questioned my hypomanic symptoms and whether I truly had bipolar disorder at all and instead wanted to diagnose me with BPD based on other reports questioning this.

Overall, my experience both at Parkwood and with him was not healing nor productive. My outpatient psychiatrist, Dr. Sharma, had me discharged, and I have been doing better; I’m back at University and functioning better.

I hope other patients have a better experience with him.

Dr. Janzen is knowledgeable and caring, perhaps a bit overzealous, but psychiatrists in general seem to underestimate the potential of their medicines, especially in excessive dosage, to make patients feel worse, sometimes much worse (even suicidal), which they then (unbelievably) attribute to an exacerbation of the underlying illness.

Dr. Janzen is a wonderful psychiatrist. He made me very at ease which is not always an easy thing to do. He is very knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge. He put me in touch with some outside means of working things out for myself. He took the time to listen and asked very genuine and pointed questions. I found him very reassuring as the world of depression and anxiety as I have come to know it is very new to me. He was able to explain a lot in a short period of time. Very approachable. Thank you, Dr. Janzen.

Met him for the first time today and if first impressions, have told me anything then I know that I have a winner with him. Thank God because I need the help! I was a drop in today and he gladly saw me he could have rushed me through but he didn't he took me seriously and so did his team. Thanks so much.
