Hi Paul,
I doubt you will see this message or remember me.
I saw you for several years. I had some chronic abdominal pain that you decided was IC (even though it wasn’t a true reaction) and your staff lectured me because I was stressed about changing my diet—once again. (I am also celiac).
Due to my pain continuing, I asked you about endometriosis surgery since my mom had it. You tried to dismiss me by saying you’d do it but really didn’t feel it would give me the answers I needed.
You found stage one endometriosis but still dismissed my pain.
Later, I returned to you for replacing my IUD.
Not only was this one of the most traumatic procedures that left me in agonizing pain while my body was convulsing and cramping involuntarily. It was agonizing pain. My mom was there trying to help me and you felt the need to say ‘yeah, you should probably slow down your breathing.’
Really? Is this how trauma informed a doctor should be?
All of this to say—I now have stage 4 cancer that was pressing on my bladder and kidneys. I suspect it was there at least since 2017 so definitely when you were investigating my ‘IC diagnosis’ (which I haven’t had a flare since my 10x10x11 leiomyosarcoma TUMOR was removed so I don’t believe your diagnosis was accurate and it seems like a quick way to get rid of a difficult patient who needs help and to move on).
I implore you to get out of a narcissistic mindset and see that your mansplaining and dismissive behavior is not only emotionally harmful but also physically harmful.
What if you would have caught my cancer before it got this bad?
Now I’m on disability and traumatized by doctors like you.
This is my email telling you that you owe it to the patients you serve to do better. Listen to them and believe their symptoms. Don’t brush them off assuming you know what’s best.
I am appalled by how you treated me and how many important things you missed while making me feel like it was all in my head.
I have stage 4 cancer, Paul. It was not in my head and you missed it.

I’m surprised by the reviews I’ve seen. Although I have experienced Dr. Gehring on days he seems “off”, I’ve never felt like my medical care was at risk. Dr. Gehring delivered my son via C - section and my recovery process was so much easier than what I’ve heard other women describe. I attribute that to Dr. Gehrings knowledge and experience in surgery.

Think twice about going to Dr. Gehring if you have endometriosis. I saw Dr. Gehring for 14-plus years and thought he was a great, thorough doctor. He’s friendly, and I even referred him to friends and family. I felt safe under his care. But one day, during an exam, a nodule was found and I was told I needed surgery ASAP. During that surgery is when Dr. Gehring found endometriosis. The endo was elsewhere (that Gehring removed), but it also showed up on my bowels and was shaved off laparoscopically by a colorectal surgeon that Dr. Gehring recommended. At the time, I knew virtually nothing about endo and had no idea it could eventually come back. Dr. Gehring never advised me that it could come back, and at every annual appointment said everything looked good.
I thought everything was okay.
2.5 years after surgery to remove the endo from my bowels, I started burping all the time, very gassy, and felt extremely bloated. I thought I had IBS. Again, not thinking anything about endo. When I started having extreme pain and blood in my stool, I went to my primary care doctor who I knew could refer me to a gastroenterologist. When I told her about my symptoms, she was the one who suggested it could be endometriosis, but that I needed to get a colonoscopy. Before that appointment with my primary care, I had seen Dr. Gehring a few months prior and he never once mentioned endometriosis. It was like he didn’t pick up on the fact that the endometriosis could be coming back!
I had a colonoscopy and it showed a large mass in my rectum. I spent 2 grueling weeks waiting on the results as the docs had never seen anything like it, and finally ruled out colon cancer. It was endo.
Long story short, I ended up needing a colon resection, my rectum was reconstructed, and I had an ileostomy bag placed on my stomach (small intestine) for 2 months. I also had a total hysterectomy. The endo had actually dragged one of my ovaries into my rectum! In this surgery, 3 surgeons operated, including a gynecological oncologist, because my new OB/GYN felt it was too risky to do the hysterectomy because of how extensive the endometriosis was.
So after 2 life changing, challenging months, I had the bag surgically removed (called an ostomy takedown) and was able to defecate on my own again, but to this day it’s hard. It’s a struggle every day.
Dr. Gehring, knowing that endo was on my bowels, should have been monitoring that closely EVERY YEAR, if not every 6 months, to see if it was coming back. I should have absolutely been told there was a chance it could come back. Had I known that, when I FIRST started having gastrointestinal issues, I would’ve known it could be endo and wouldn’t have been put in the life-threatening position I was ultimately in.
My new gynecologist, thank God, educated me about endo, and I have since done extensive research on the subject.
Now I have an educated, thorough, amazing colorectal surgeon who monitors me closely, and ANY signs of endo rearing its ugly head again, he’s on it.

Horrible uncaring doctor . He told me I had ovarian cancer and would need a bilateral salpingo-oophrectomy. Then he called me two days later and told me the surgery would kill me before the cancer. He did the surgery but I did not have cancer. He left me for 12 hours bleeding from the incisions in the hospital while he went and took care of his other patients at his office. I was moved to three different floors in the hospital before he ever came back. Woke up next day with blood all in the bed from the incisions and had to go back. Never saw him again!

Horrible Doctor!!!! Has no empathy or compassion. Did my hysterectomy and had complications. I had to have a second surgery the next day. He wasn't on call but never came to check on me or call to see how I was doing. I spent two days in ICU and he stated he never knew about it. But the irony is that he ordered me medication after the second surgery. He never once cared about me or my situation. I would never recommend him for anything.

It sounds like Dr. Gehring must have been a compassionate and competent physician at one point, but in no way did I experience this and I think that person is long gone. He missed an obvious diagnosis that my family physician caught within minutes a week later. During the appointment, he made me feel like an imbecile for even asking whether it was a possibility. His attitude is the strangest thing - he comes off as being nice, but the minute you ask a question in your appointment, be prepared to be put down in the strangest passive aggressive ways. Heaven help you if you ask him to explain something. He takes it as some sort of challenge rather than a desire for information and you *will* walk out feeling small and mistreated. His recommendations about very serious medical issues lack any basis in evidence based medicine which is extremely concerning. After trying to make this work for a couple years, I'm running (not walking) to find a new doctor.

Do not go to this Dr, he was the most unpleasant person I have come in contact with in a long time. Not only was he rude, he lacks compassion, manners and flat out lied to me about treatment options, it was as if it was a huge inconvenience for him to be talking to me, after insulting me he left me sitting there for 45 minutes, I walked out and cried my eyes out, I will be filing a formal complaint.

. He told me you can't take HRT if you are still menstruating

I had Dr. Gehring highly recommended to me, and was amazed at my experience. I went in to consult on some contraceptive issues I was having re: nearing menopause and having some cardio health issues that created some side effect risk. He recommended that I begin using a contraceptive method with quite a high failure rate. When I voiced concern over this, he said my pregnancy risk was so low. I should just risk it. I told him that friends with menopause babies left me reluctant on that front. He said (AN EXACT QUOTE) "Cheer up. If you get pregnant, your baby can play with your friend's children. Or, you could risk stroke. Take your pick." If you aren't there for OB services or don't plan to have kids, I recommend you RUN from this office. The real kicker is the Dr. was clearly unaware that my age group has the highest rate of unintended pregnancy. When I mentioned that, he said, "No they don't." Uh, not according to JAMA, Doc! Disrespectful, lacking in basic knowledge, and a total waste of time. If there were negative stars, I'd use them. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Dr Ghering delivered my second child. First pregnancy was difficult resulting in emerg c-section. I switched to ghering when I became pregnant with 2nd child. He saved this baby's life. I had a reg scheduled appt when he recognized a life-threatening complication. Shuttled me to OR for another EMERGENY c-section. I had personal relationship with neonatologist at different hospital who both had "checked out" for holiday weekend. He knew I wanted one or both of them in operating room; he tracked them down on their vacation & got them in that operating room within an hour. These 3 drs saved my child's life. After delivery I was told had dr ghering not acted so quickly my child wouldn't have made it thru wknd & I would've delivered a dead baby. What I owe this man? He is caring knowledgeable & incredible in a crisis. I thank him every day as this child is now in high school & healthy. I will now be sending my children to him. Paul is 1 of best in COUNTRY! Ask ANY OTHER DOCTOR!

I've been seeing gehring for about 3 years now. In the beginning he was very nice and personable but now it seems something has changed. Every time I've gone in the wait is OVER an hour long. I was diagnosed with HPV and have had to undergo a couple very painful biopsies. (when these were done i was not informed ahead of time of what was going to happen. The second time i walked out and almost fainted from the pain. I had to lay down in the middle of the waiting room) It got worse and had a LEEP procedure done. I was given a Xanax to calm my nerves but was not prepared for what was going on. It was so painful. When it was done he told me to make an appointment for 6 months for a follow up and that was it. No "call me for any concerns" or any kind of aftercare advice. I had to look it up myself. I felt violated, betrayed and that experience truly scarred me.
