Very very nice doctor. She feels for her patients like they're family. Once in a while, I call her up with questions about my husband, because I trust her more than his doctors. And she talks to me and gives me good advice, and he's not even her patient! It's too bad she's not the kind of specialist that can treat his problem.
As another poster noted, Mai Brooks was banned from doing clinical research at UCLA for four years, after falsifying research data in a cancer study cited in The Lancet (Google her and you'll find the article from The Scientist magazine). She also provided false data to the NIH for a grant.
While she may never do this again, my experience with her is that she wants bad outcomes to go away and everything to be fine. She'll claim you'll recover considerably sooner than other doctors will agree and when I needed to go to the ER she told me I could wait. The ER admitting doctor said it was good I came in right away.
I was referred to Dr. Brooks due to lump found in my left breast and was told by my GP to have her do a breast biopsy. During the exam Dr. Brooks felt another lump and stated she would perform a needle biopsy. She stated she wanted an ultrasound I explained that I had one done already. Luckily I had my copy with me. She brought me to another waiting room as she reviewed the ultrasound and mammogram, she came out and said you don't need a biopsy. Literally in tears, she tells me to take motrin for the pain and to rub Vitamin E on my breast!!! No compassion and did not seem to care!
Dr brooks is tremendous! I couldn't believe it when the radiologist called me and told me I have breast cancer. Nobody in my family has breast cancer. My mother in law had it and it was scary. My husband, my sister and my 2 kids went to my appointment with me. She's actuarially the second surgeon I saw. She seats everybody down and talked to everybody, she answered my questions and everybody else too. I felt she really cared for ME, I knew then I wanted her to do my surgery. I now had my surgery, everything was better than I expected. I made the right decision going with Dr Brooks. I tell everybody in my support group about her.
My mammogram showed a white mass on my left breast that needed to be tested according to my GP. I was very unsettled. I have three young children and a husband who travels for his job so I had all sorts of horrible thoughts. I wanted to get the test done immediately and so my GP called Dr. Brooks and she agreed to see me late that afternoon. Luckily I was able to arrange for my sitter to come over on short notice. Dr. Brooks calmed me down and arranged for me to have a biopsy done the next day. Another agonizing day past waiting for the results and then Dr. Brooks phoned me at home to tell me the news that the white mass was benign. I don’t know why it is, but everytime I get a test from another doctor, I always have to make an appointment to go in and see the doctor. I am greatful to Dr. Brooks for how fast she was able to help me with my situation. She really showed a lot of urgency which is what I really wanted and needed.
Dr. Brooks was great. She helped me through a tough time, to face my cancer and to survive it. After my primary called me to tell me my biopsy result, I think I was in denial for at least a week. I went through the motion, getting this test done and that blood done, but I was hoping somebody would tell me there was a mistake and I really don't have cancer. Dr. Brooks talked to me and my husband, explained things and went over my choices for surgery, the benefits the risks, etc. I called her late at night in a panic, and she talked to me and helped calm me down. During the day, i'm busy and it's not so bad, but at night is very bad. I take my boy to my visit with Dr. Brooks, and she did not mind him running around interrupting us. Before my surgery, she prayed with me and my family. We all feel that God has brought me to the right surgeon. My operation went well, and I'm fine now, thanks to Dr. Brooks.
It was very easy to make an appointment to see Dr. Brooks. The office staff and nurse were friendly and accommodating. I did not have to wait long to see the Dr. and there were plenty of magazines in the waiting room to help pass the time. I went to see my dermatologist because of two dark moles on my back. As a young kid and teenager I spent a lot of time in the southern California sun without wearing sun screen so I was concerned about whether the moles were cancerous. My dermatologist scraped the moles and got unclear results so he sent me to see Dr. Brooks. Dr. Brooks removed the moles and sent them to the lab for testing and it turns out they were benign. Dr. Brooks was very friendly and efficient and called me as soon as she received the reports from the lab.
This guy is a cyber bully! Let me tell you about the Dr. Brooks I know. This year was horrible for me, 20 thirteen really unlucky number. I lost my job. I lost my insurance. Dr. Brooks saw me for FREE! My operation cost me a fraction of what other surgeon offices quoted me (I suppose she has to pay the rent and the help). She is an ANGEL !!!
When Dr Brooks came to UCLA, she hired a technician for her lab. Instead of working, he was day trading and lost money when the dot com bubble burst. He asked for months off with pay. When he returned, he sabotaged people's experiments and stole from the lab. Dr Brooks asked him to resign but he refused and made threats to her. As she was pregnant, she was afraid and went to the police. He then falsely claimed that she told him to fake lab results. Since she was the head of her lab, she was deemed responsible for anything that happened under her watch, regardless. As she was ordered to close her lab, she found jobs for me and others. During her misfortune, she still thought of other people! She left UCLA and continues to help patients. But I see that he is still obsessed with hurting her, by posting bad reviews on the internet. It is so unfair, but Dr Brooks tells me she wants to concentrate on love and forgiveness. So I am telling this story, as my way to right a wrong.
Dr. Brooks was my surgeon for my Radical Mastecomy. 1 week later she wanted to do more surgery on me, so I had outpatient surgery with a re-section at a surgi center. Horrible time then she wanted more on the 27th and 2nd. I got a second Doctor Review and they stated no more surgery, my left arm, was almost dead, and I will be having P.T. like the other comment. she never informed me of the risk she also yelled in the o.r. room to the Anesthia that was trying to help me due to a breathing tube issue and had to have local. I will never go to her again, and she will not give me the RX for my bras. She stated I need to come in for an appointment of which I am no longer seeing her. My drains came out and if it wasn't for the kind care I received at Cedars I might have had to go to the ER room, please do not go to here. She was banded from UCLA in the 2000 lost her lab. She faked records for a grant when she was with UCLA. Goes by the name Mai Nguyen Brooks MD
