Poultry = Burning Hands

My hands burn after I eat poultry. It starts within an hour and can last up to 2 hours. Sometimes the burning spreads up my wrists and into my forearms. This has been happening for a few years. Any ideas why?

Stop eating poultry; get to
Stop eating poultry; get to a doctor, and ask him or her.
Does it happen only when you
Does it happen only when you eat the wings or any part of the bird ?
Janzine, did you handle the
Janzine, did you handle the bird, clean the raw bird?
Is Twain suggesting that

I asked my PCP and she just shrugged. It happens when I eat at restaurants as well as at home, regardless of what part of the bird I eat.

Hey, you got to keep an open mind about these things.
Janzine, most people with
Janzine, most people with poultry allergies have different symptoms than the ones you describe (rash, trouble breathing, abdominal cramps), but anything is possible.
Try keeping off all poultry for 10 days (broths as well) and see if you have any sypmtoms.
Then try just one meal with one type of poultry and wait a week.
Do the same with another type of poultry, etc.
If you get a reaction to just one type of poultry, try it again a few weeks later.
If you are able to detect a consistent pattern, inform your doctor. It may then be worth seeing an allergist.
Thanks Twain! I have already
Thanks Twain! I have already tried that..... We eat a diet very low in meats, so it is not uncommon to go a week with no poultry. Funny thing - I do not react to eggs! Just the meat. The pattern is consistent, my MD did not seem interested, so I have turned to this forum for help. I have an autoimmune disorder (Graves Disease) and I wonder if this could be related. But there is no such thing as an "autoimmune doctor" and my endocrinologist is not interested either.
Just my 2 cents, it may not
Just my 2 cents, it may not be the bird, but what is in the bird, antibiotics, steroids,
anti fungals, pesticides, herbicides.
Now with all that potential trouble.... and since you eat little meat, your tolerance may not be what, mine for instance is... I use DDT as a marinade.
Try a free range, organic chicken?

There may not be any such thing as an autoimmune doctor (I don't know if there is), but the following doctors have tested me for autoimmune diseases: rheumy, neuro, allergist, infectious disease, endo, pcp. I know your endo and pcp aren't interested, but another doctor might be. I'd start with the allergist because many of the allergists out there are allergists/immunologists.

That would be my first choice too.
Blake2go's thought is a good one, but those contaminants would also be found in beef, posk, etc - foods to which you do not have symptoms. There are people who have real IgE-mediated allergic reactions to poultry proteins.
Having a poultry allergy but tolerating eggs in the norm because the proteins in eggs are different from those in poultry. There is however one protein common to both, and people allergic to this have poultry-egg allergy - not common.
